Damned un-English sailors : British submariners, 1901-1945 /by Richard MacKay.
"During both world wars the British submariner faced a one-in-three chance of death, a casualty ratio second only to the horrific loss rate endured by the aircrews Bomber Command. Neither was he spared the perils of his inherently dangerous trade during peacetime: until the 1940s submarine losses through misadventure averaged one boat per year. Damned Un-English Sailors is a social history charting the first half-century of the development of the Royal Navy Submarine Service. With much information taken from previously unpublished sources, it portrays their lives ashore and afloat in war and in peace. From the selection and training of its officers and men - for decades a largely extemporized affair - to daily life aboard His Majesties Submarines between 1901 and 1945, Damned Un-English Sailors sheds light on this oft-overlooked aspect of British naval history."--Provided by the publisher.

A century of carrier aviation : the evolution of ships and shipborne aircraft /David Hobbs.
"It is now almost exactly a hundred years since a heavier-than-air craft first took off and landed on a warship, and from the very beginning flying at sea made unique demands on men and machines. As warplanes grew larger, faster and heavier, air operations from ships were only possible at all through constant development in technology, techniques and tactics. This book charts the progress and growing effectiveness of naval air power, concentrating on the advances and inventions - most of them British - that allowed shipborne aircraft to match their land-based counterparts, and looking at their contribution to 20th century warfare. Written by a retired Fleet Air Arm pilot and and award-winning historian of naval flying, this is a masterly overview of the history of aviation in the world's navies down to the present day. Heavily illustrated from the author's comprehensive collection of photographs, the book will be essential reading to anyone with an interest in navies or air power."

Abolition : a history of slavery and antislavery /Seymour Drescher.
In one form or another, slavery has existed throughout the world for millennia. It helped to change the world, and the world transformed the institution. In the 1450s, when Europeans from the small corner of the globe least enmeshed in the institution first interacted with peoples of other continents, they created, in the Americas, the most dynamic, productive, and exploitative system of coerced labor in human history. Three centuries later these same intercontinental actions produced a movement that successfully challenged the institution at the peak of its dynamism. Within another century a new surge of European expansion constructed Old World empires under the banner of antislavery. However, twentieth-century Europe itself was inundated by a new system of slavery, larger and more deadly than its earlier system of New World slavery. This book examines these dramatic expansions and contractions of the institution of slavery and the impact of violence, economics, and civil society in the ebb and flow of slavery and antislavery during the last five centuries.

German Malta maps / Albert Ganado, Joseph Schiráo.
"This is the second major exhibition after the first Miniature Maps of Malta exhibition which was organized by Heritage Malta and the Ministry for Gozo in September 2009 using 'The Albert Ganado Malta Map Collection' which is housed at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta, and other rare maps from private collectors. The idea of the German Malta Maps exhibition stemmed from a lecture which Albert Ganado had delivered on German cartographers in Mainz in 1993, but which unfortunately never reached publication stage. Since maps by German cartographers tend to be limited, the parameters of the exhibition were therefore broadened to also include German authors and engravers. Over 80m maps are depicted in this book, some of which are being published for the first time."--Provided by the publisher.

The fourth force : the untold story of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary since 1945 /Geoff Puddefoot.
"This book charts the veritable revolution that has overtaken the Royal Fleet Auxiliary since the end of the Second World War. Woven together from a combination of technical ship data, official correspondence and personal recollections, it is predominantly about the men and women of the RFA and their stories, giving an insight into the underreported history of a service whose initials unofficially translate as Ready For Anything."--Provided by the publisher.

Gone... : a chronicle of the seafarers & fabulous clipper ships of R & J Craig of Glasgow ; Craig's "Counties" /"Bill" Cumming.
A book about the full-rig ships of the 19th century Scottish shipping firm R & J Craig. These merchant ships were named after Scottish counties and were known as Craig's 'Counties'. In 1875 Robert and John Craig launched a 4-masted square rigged iron sailing clipper, the County of Peebles, at the time when steamships were set to overtake sail power. Over the next decade eleven sister ships followed. One of these, the County of Roxburgh, was possibly the fastest merchant wind ship ever created. Her wrecked hull still exists on Takarora Island. The book has black-and-white photographs, and appendices. Appendix A lists the master mariners associated with the 'County' ships. Appendix E gives ship details of the R & J Craig fleet.

British destroyers A-I and Tribal classes / text by Les Brown ; plans and colour artwork by George Richardson.
"This is the latest in a series that provides ship modellers with all they need to know about a famous class or type of warship and associated model kits. This volume covers the inter-war destroyers of the Royal Navy, from the post World War I prototypes Amazon and Ambuscade, through the nine basically similar but incrementally improved classes, to the radically different and far more powerful 'Tribal' class design of1936. Forming the backbone of the British and Canadian flotillas, these ships include some of the most famous names in destroyer history - Cossack, Glowworm, Hardy, Ardent and Acasta, to name only a few. With its unparalleled level of visual information - paint schemes, models, line drawings and photographs - it is simply the best reference for any modelmaker setting out to build one of these dashing little ships."--Provided by the publisher.

American passage : the history of Ellis Island /Vincent J. Cannato.
"For most of New York's early history, Ellis Island had been an obscure little island that barely held itself above high tide. Today the small island stands alongside Plymouth Rock in our nation's founding mythology as the place where many of our ancestors first touched American soil. American Passage captures a time and a place unparalleled in American immigration and history, and articulates the dramatic and bittersweet accounts of the immigrants, officials, interpreters, and social reformers who all played an important role in Ellis Island's chronicle. In this sweeping, often heart-wrenching epic, Vincent J. Cannato reveals that the history of Ellis Island is ultimately the story of what it means to be an American."--Provided by the publisher.
