Anatomy of the lighthouse
"This fascinating book examines lighthouses inside and out, from the primitive beacon and the fabled Pharos of the ancient world to the "Texas towers" of modern times. It includes a survey of the meteorological and coastal-geographical conditions that engendered the original need for lighthouses at treacherous sites, as well as the causes of the hazards, including violent hurricanes and slow, inexorable erosion, that pose a constant threat to the continuing existence of today's aids to navigation. The anatomy of the different types of lighthouse that evolved in response to the challenges thrown up by specific locations are explained and examined, from onshore masonry and cast-iron towers to the submerged screwpile and caisson structures that finally enabled offshore lighthouse construction, both out at sea and within navigable inland waterways."--Provided by the publisher.

Tides : a very short introduction /David George Bowers; Emyr Martyn Roberts.
''Explains the nature and cause of the tide, its observation and prediction, unusual tides, and their relevance to us. Blends clear explanations of well known tidal phenomena with recent insights in the deep ocean and coastal seas. Considers the effects of tidal processes on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn and the possibility of tidally-heated liquid oceans with their own ecosystems. Discusses how we can study the role of the tide in the geological and biological evolution of our own planet with innovative computer models.''--Provided by the publisher.

British motor fishing vessels / John McWilliams
"British traditional working boats are famous -- Morecambe Bay prawners, Manx luggers, Scots fifies and zulus, Lowestoft and Yarmouth drifters, Yorkshire cobles, Colchester smacks, Hastings beach boats, Brixham trawlers, and many others. Over a century ago, progressive fishermen began to install engines in their boats. Motor fishing boats have been part of our coastal scene since then. Local boatbuilders built local kinds of boat to suit each home port and its fisheries; examples include Cornish pilchard boats and long liners, Devon crabbers and beach boats, motor bawleys and cocklers, motor drifters and seiners, and the famous ring netters of the Clyde ports. These boats have gone or are fast disappearing. This book tells their story."--Provided by the publisher.

Port towns and urban cultures : international histories of the waterfront, c.1700-2000 /Brad Beaven, Karl Bell, Robert James, editors.
"Despite the port's prominence in maritime history, its cultural significance has long been neglected in favour of its role within economic and imperial networks. Defined by their intersection of maritime and urban space, port towns were sites of complex cultural exchanges. This book, the product of international scholarship, offers innovative and challenging perspectives on the cultural histories of ports, ranging from eighteenth-century Africa to twentieth-century Australasia and Europe. The essays in this important collection explore two key themes; the nature and character of 'sailortown' culture and port-town life, and the representations of port towns that were forged both within and beyond urban-maritime communities. The book's exploration of port town identities and cultures, and its use of a rich array of methodological approaches and cultural artefacts, will make it of great interest to both urban and maritime historians. It also represents a major contribution to the emerging, interdisciplinary field of coastal studies."--Provided by the publisher.

The General Steam Navigation Company, c.1850-1913 : a business history /Robert Edward Forrester.
This PhD thesis details the history of The General Steam Navigation Company, a London-based shipowner operating a range of steamship liner services, mainly for passengers but also for some cargo (including cattle). The study places the company within the context of the general history of British coastal shipping and short-sea shipping. As essentially a business history, it focuses on the motivations and activities of the management and provides a detailed analysis of the company's financial and operational performance within a changing political, legal and economic framework in an era that featured both 'The Great Victorian Boom' and 'The Great Depression'. Forrester examines the role played by two key Board chairmen, J Herbert Tritton and Richard White, in the fluctuating fortunes of the company during these times, in which it experienced a near collapse and slow recovery. Sample Profit and Loss Accounts, Balance Sheets and Receipts and Costs data are provided in numerous tables and figures.

Lifeboat stations of North Eastern England : from Sunderland to Humberside through time /Paul Chrystal.
"This is the first book to be published which takes then and now views of the fourteen lifeboat stations on the north east coast between Sunderland and the Humber estuary. This lavishly illustrated book traces some of the many ways in which the lifeboat stations at Sunderland, Seaham, Hartlepool, Redcar, Staithes and Runswick Bay, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, Scarborough, Flamborough, Filey, Bridlington, Withernsea and Spurn Point have changed over the years. 200 images supported by an informative text will delight everyone interested in the history of the lifeboat stations in these coastal towns and villages. Anyone who lives, or lived, in any of them will enjoy a nostalgic journey through the past that takes them back a hundred or so years and shows them how things have changed. Proceeds from the sale of the book are going to the RNLI."--Provided by the publisher

National Coastwatch : the NCI story /Brian French.
"The NCI is a voluntary body with a mission to reopen, develop and maintain a visual watch from the coastguard stations abandoned by HM Coastguard after extensive reorganisation in the 1970s. Following the tragic and avoidable loss of two fishermen after a shipwreck at Bass Point in 1984, the NCI came into being and, in 1994, reopened Bass Point station. The NCI now boasts more members than the coastguard, and operates closely with HMCG and the RNLI as part of the National Rescue Services. Split into two parts, this book explains the history and development of the NCI, key figures, dates, incidents and the training and day to day work of the coastal agencies. It also shows the stations around the coast complete with maps and photographs. Newhaven is the 26th station to open, with the NCI averaging three or four new stations each year."--Back cover.

The Tweed to the Northern Isles / Mike Smylie
"Since Britain joined the European Economic Community in the mid-1970s, the fishing industry along our coasts has been under pressure from overfishing. In this book, Mike Smylie takes us on a tour from the Tweed to the Northern Isles, taking us to harbours that you could once walk over on the hundreds of fishing boats to coastal inlets where the herring once shoaled. We also see the fishermen and women on shore and at sea, their boats, the harbours and the methods used to catch the fish. Many of the smaller fishing villages on Scotland's east coast are now tourist hotspots, with the industry concentrated in ports such as Eyemouth, Peterhead, Fraserburgh and Lerwick and Mike Smylie shows the industry's decline and its resurgence in those centres today. From the quaint fishing villages of Fife to the abandoned herring stations of Orkney and Shetland, the industry is illustrated by the contrast between these old and new images."--Provided by the publisher.

Pleasure steamers of the Yorkshire Coast / Andrew Gladwell.
"For over 150 years, pleasure steamers and paddle steamers operated on day trips from the Yorkshire coastal resorts, sailing from Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington up and down the coast, giving the day tripper a taste of life aboard in exchange for a few shillings. From the Bilsdale, Frenchman, Yorkshireman, Coronia and the other steamers that served the Yorkshire Coast, Andrew Gladwell presents a unique glimpse of these tourist steamers at the peak of their careers in the period from the 1900s to the 1960s. He tells the story of the pleasure steamers that once plied these waters, using many rare and previously unpublished images of the ships and the resorts they served. Learn of the musicians that would once perform aboard, see the steamers cruising the dramatic coastline and learn about the paddle and pleasure steamer captains and crew that worked the Yorkshire coast."--Provided by the publisher.

Directory of Clyde paddle steamers / Alistair Deayton.
"In 1812, the first paddle steamer to sail in European coastal waters made its maiden voyage between Glasgow and Greenock. No longer was man restricted to sail, but steam had shown the way. Since then, over 400 paddle steamers have plied the waters of the Clyde, some for a short while, others to make a short transit up the Leven to Loch Lomond and others for long and fruitful careers. For the first time, a truly definitive record of the Clyde paddlers has been produced. Alistair Deayton has used contemporary records from the Clyde Trustees and local newspapers as well as the steamship operators and the shipyards to produce a book detailing every one of the Clyde steamers from the Comet of 1812 to the last surviving seagoing paddle steamer, PS Waverley. He has created a list of all 419 paddlers that have sailed the waters of the upper and lower Clyde on revenue-earning service."--Provided by the publisher.

Atlas of the transatlantic slave trade / David Eltis and David Richardson ; foreword by David Brion Davis ; afterword by David W. Blight.
Between 1501 and 1867, the transatlantic slave trade claimed an estimated 12.5 million Africans and involved almost every country with an Atlantic coastline. In this extraordinary book, two leading historians have created the first comprehensive, up-to-date atlas on this 350-year history of kidnapping and coercion. It features nearly 200 maps, especially created for the volume, that explore every detail of the African slave traffic to the New World.-publisher description.

Russian battleships and cruisers of the Russo-Japanese War / Mark Lardas.
"This book examines the major warships of the Imperial Russian Navy which participated in the Russo-Japanese War. The focus is on the battleships, coastal defence warships, and cruisers of the Pacific Squadron and Baltic Squadron that fought during the war. It discusses in detail their design and development between the years of 1885 and 1905, concentrating particularly on battleships and cruisers. The book explores, in depth, the mutually influential relationship between Russian and foreign warship design, as Russia progressed from a reliance on foreign designs and shipyards towards an ability to produce its own influential ships, such as the Novik. The title also outlines the gripping operational history of the Russian warships which participated in the Russo-Japanese war, tracing their activity before and during the combat, as well as the post-war fate of those ships which were bombarded, scuttled, captured, or salvaged. Packed with contemporary photography and full-colour illustrations, this title offers a detailed and definitive guide to the design, development, and destiny of the Russian warships which battled the Japanese in the Eastern seas."--Provided by the publisher.

A sailor's life : the life and times of John Short of Watchet 1839-1933 /Tom Brown.
John Short ('Yankee Jack') was a merchant seaman and a recognised 'shantyman' taken on as crew because in addition to his experience as a seaman, he had the ability to lead work songs to keep the crew working at hauling or heaving efficiently. Short contributed fifty-seven shanties when interviewed by the English folk song collector Cecil Sharp in 1914, the majority deep-sea shanties. Short followed his father into the coastal trade at the age of nine in 1848 but soon moved into ocean trading routes. Short retired from the sea in 1901 and died in 1933, his death marked by an obituary in The Times. His story is told through his voyages and extracts from poems and shanties. The shanties are published in full with music in an appendix. Other appendices list and provide further details of his ships and voyages undertaken as well as a family tree.
