Boat trips in Devon & Cornwall / Ian Boyle.
"The counties of Devon and Cornwall provide some of the most attractive coastal scenery anywhere within the British Isles and a plethora of small boat operators exist to enable visitors to witness and enjoy their wide variety of landscapes from the water. The vessels operated vary from those of the latest fibre-glass construction to pre-war clinker-built boats of noble heritage. In addition to the purely excursion boats which operate on a seasonal basis, Devon and Cornwall also boast an interesting selection of ferries which are a vital part of the region's infrastructure across the series of deep flooded valleys that dissect its southern coast. If this fascinating array of ferries and excursion boats is not enough, beyond Land's End we come to the Isles of Scilly which rely on their maritime connections as a vital lifeline with the rest of Britain. Here too, small ships are operated from St Mary's to the other islands and out into the Atlantic to the famous Bishop Rock lighthouse."--Back cover.

Allied warships vs the Atlantic Wall : Normandy 1944 /Steven J. Zaloga ; illustrated by Adam Hook.
"In this study, military historian Steven J. Zaloga explores the clash between Batterie Hamburg (defending Cherbourg) and the Allied naval bombardment group led by the battleship USS Texas on 25 June 1944. He also examines the evolution of Allied naval doctrine, which was based on experiences in successive amphibious operations, and which enabled the Allies to successfully overcome the coastal gun threat. Illustrated with over 50 photographs, stunning artworks of the opposing weaponry and detailed maps, this is a fascinating exploration of a key episode during the Battle of Normandy in 1944."

The Ashburner schooners : the story of the first shipbuilders of Barrow-in-Furness
"Schooners formed the majority of sailing vessels operating out of ports on the West coast of Victorian Britain, and the Ashburner family, the first shipbuilders at Barrow, were amongst their most distinguished builders. This book presents the history of that family and the ships they built, from the launch of Lake Windermere's first passenger steamer in 1845 through until the last schooner ceased trading in 1967. It covers the whole spectrum of their activity - their construction, the coastal and deepwater trades they operated in and the men who built, owned and sailed them. [...] Around the lives of the Ashburners and their ships, the broader subject of Furness sailing ships is also presented. [...] This book will be of interest to the maritime enthusiast, but has been written with minimum of technical jargon, to suit readers interested in Victorian industrial history and the local history."--Provided by the publisher.

Tide : the science and lore of the greatest force on earth /Hugh Aldersey-Williams.
"From Cnut to D-Day, the history and science of the unceasing tide is explored for the first time. Half of the world's population lives in coastal regions lapped by tidal waters. Yet how little most of us know about the tide - a key force on our planet that has altered the course of history and will transform our future. Our ability to predict and understand the tide depends on centuries of science, from the observations of Aristotle and the theories of Newton to today's supercomputer calculations. This story is punctuated here by notable tidal episodes in history, from Caesar's thwarted invasion of Britain to the catastrophic flooding of Venice, and interwoven with a rich folklore that continues to inspire art and literature today. With Aldersey-Williams as our guide to the most feared and celebrated tidal features on the planet, from the original maelstr²m in Scandinavia to the world's highest tides in Nova Scotia to the crumbling coast of East Anglia, the importance of the tide, and the way it has shaped - and will continue to shape - our civilization, becomes startlingly clear."--Provided by the publisher.

Neither fugitive nor free : Atlantic slavery, freedom suits, and the legal culture of travel /Edlie L. Wong.
Studies lawsuits to gain freedom for slaves on the grounds of their having traveled to free territory, starting with Somerset v. Stewart (England, 1772), Commonwealth v. Aves (Massachusetts, 1836), Dred Scott v. Sanford, and cases brought questioning the legitimacy of Negro Seamen Acts in the antebellum coastal South. These lawsuits and accounts of them are compared to fugitive slave narratives to shed light on both. The differing impact of freedom obtained from such suits for men and women (women could claim that their children were free, once they were judged free) is examined.

Hartland Point to North Foreland / Mike Smylie.
"Since Britain joined the European Economic Community in the mid-1970s, the fishing industry along our coasts has been under pressure due to overfishing. Mike Smylie takes us on a tour of England's South Coast, giving us an insight into life in the harbours where the mackerel once shoaled, and from where you could formerly walk over the hundreds of fishing boats that were travelling to coastal inlets. Each area of the coast had unique boats and methods of catching fish. This fascinating selection of photographs traces some of the many ways in which the fishing industry from Hartland Point to North Foreland has changed and developed over the last century. Mike Smylie tells us of the fishermen and women on shore and at sea, of the harbours, boats and methods used to catch fish. He also documents the changes and the decline of the industry, since the days when it employed thousands. Covering the English Channel, Mike Smylie brings the pilchard and lobster industries to life, as well as looking at the unique fishing boats to be found all along this stretch of the English coast."--Provided by the publisher.

East Anglia against the Tricolor 1789-1815 : An English region against revolutionary and Napoleonic France /Julian Foynes
"The years 1789 to 1815 were traumatic for British history in many ways A 'mad' king had lost the American colonies and now revolution in France, welcomed by many East Anglians, had invoked fear in many others. Thomas Paine and Horatio Nelson were two Norfolk men who would come to prominence for very different reasons. Suffolk would be a temporary refuge for emigre French families. And Essex would be a marching ground for thousands of British troops who stood ready to throw back Napoleon's forces. Local voices preached revolution and loyalty. Offshore, the North Sea fleet sailed from Yarmouth, Harwich and numerous small coastal towns to combat the French privateers."--Provided by the publisher.

We fought them in gunboats / Robert Hichens
"As twilight fell over the southern North Sea, Felixstowe Dock reverberated to the roar of engines. The fast boats of Coastal Forces were preparing for their night-time missions. Would they tackle a trawler patrol, an enemy convoy or their particular foes, the E-boats? Would they rescue a downed airman or deliver a Dutch resistance agent? Initially these small, wooden boats were ill-equipped for success. Peacetime solicitor and inspirational leader, Robert Hichens, fought fierce bureaucratic battles ashore while he and his young crew risked their lives at sea. This is the completely de-censored version of the book he was writing when he died. 'Hitch' was killed in action in April 1943. His HMS Beehive companions fought on until the E-boat surrender in May 1945. This is also their story."--Provided by the publisher.

Warships of the Great War era : a history in ship models /David Hobbs.
"The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich houses the largest collection of scale ship models in the world, many of which are official, contemporary artefacts made by the craftsmen of the navy or the shipbuilders themselves, and ranging from the mid seventeenth century to the present day. As such they represent a three-dimensional archive of unique importance and authority. Treated as historical evidence, they offer more detail than even the best plans, and demonstrate exactly what the ships looked like in a way that even the finest marine painter could not achieve. This book is one of a series that takes a selection of the best models to tell the story of specific ship types - in this case, the various classes of warship that fought in the First World War, from dreadnoughts to coastal motor boats. It reproduces a large number of model photos, all in full colour, and including many close-up and detail views. These are captioned in depth, but many are also annotated to focus attention on interesting or unusual features. Although pictorial in emphasis, the book weaves the pictures into an authoritative text, producing an unusual and attractive form of technical history."--Provided by the publisher.

Britannia's navy on the west coast of north america 1812-1914. / Barry Gough
"The influence of the Royal Navy on the development of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest was both extensive and effective. Yet all too frequently, its impact has been ignored by historians, who instead focus on the influence of explorers, fur traders, settlers, and railway builders. In this thoroughly revised and expanded edition of his classic 1972 work, naval historian Barry Gough examines the contest for the Columbia country during the War of 1812, the 1844 British response to the aggressive American agenda of President Polk?s Manifest Destiny and cries of 'Fifty-four forty or fight', the gold-rush invasion of 30,000 outsiders, and the jurisdictional dispute in the San Juan Islands that spawned the so-called Pig War. The author also looks at the Esquimalt-based fleet in the decade before British Columbia joined Canada and the Navy's relationship with coastal indigenous peoples over the five decades that preceded the Great War."--Provided by the publisher.

Hurtigruten 125 / John Bryant.
"Since its inception in 1893, Hurtigruten and the coastal express route has continued to fascinate and attract travellers from all over the world sailing along a coastline which has no equal with over half of the voyage north of the Arctic Circle. This is both a history and celebration of its 125th birthday and also charts at how Hurtigruten AS in recent years has expanded its portfolio, with exciting voyages in the world's polar regions, setting new standards for green explorer travel. With 125 years of service behind them, half of Hurtigruten's growing fleet core business will continue to serve daily the communities along the 'long coast' of Norway between Bergen and Kirkenes. Whilst the ships may have become more cruise oriented, the fascination of being on board a workign vessel with all its ports of call remains the same. It is an eleven day round trip of over 2,500 nautical miles withover half north of the Arctic Circle with guests experiencing what is rightly called the 'most beautiful voyage in the world'. In more recent years Hurtigruten has expanded its 'Explorer' concept across the whole fleet which now includes crusies to Svalbard, Greenland, Canada, South America and Antarctica. Sailing in pristine environments comes with great responsibility and Hurtigruten's lastest ships, with their hybrid technology, will allow them to explore without adding to the carbon footprint."--provided by the publisher.

The seaside : England's love affair /Madeleine Bunting.
"England's seaside is made up of a striking variety of coastlines including cliffs, coves, pebbled shore, wide sandy beaches, salt marshes, and estuaries cutting deep inland. On these coastal edges England's great holiday resorts grew up, developed in the early eighteenth century originally as spas for medicinal bathing but soon morphing into places of pleasure, entertainment, fantasy and adventure. Acclaimed writer Madeleine Bunting journeyed clockwise around England from Scarborough to Blackpool to understand the enduring appeal of seaside towns, and what has happened to the golden sands, cold seas and donkey rides of childhood memory. Taking in some forty resorts, staying in hotels, caravans and holiday camps, she swims from their beaches and talks to their residents to delve into their landscapes, histories and contemporary plight. Once thriving, innovative places and leaders of architectural innovation, many are now struggling with the deepest deprivation and ill health in the country. Yet they still act as a bellwether for our nation, and in the stories of their poverty and neglect, Bunting finds that these holiday towns - so influential in England's history and in the shaping of our national identity - speak powerfully to the character and political state of England today."--Provided by the publisher.

Britain's working coast in Victorian and Edwardian times / John Hannavy.
"The coastline of Victorian and Edwardian Britain provided beauty, isolation, entertainment, and the venue for most people's holidays. But it was also a thriving centre of industry - shipbuilding and fishing, plus the numerous trades associated with dockyards, coastal transport and the leisure industry. This companion to the English Seaside in Victorian and Edwardian Times travels around Britain's coast - clockwise from London - looking at the industries that could be found in many of the cities and towns en route. Illustrated with an amazing collection of coloured postcards and other early photographs, the working coast of Britain is brought to life in all its bustling detail. From the naval dockyards of Chatham to the fishermen of Wick, the book opens a window onto a British coast which is now largely lost."--Back cover

Material memories of travel : the albums of a Victorian naval surgeon /Felix Driver
"This paper considers the visual archives of maritime scientific exploration, from coastal sketches to ethnographic observation. It focuses on seven albums of John Linton Palmer, a British naval surgeon who served in the Pacific in the 1850s and 1860s, which are today part of the collections of the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers). Through their drawing, recording and collecting, naval surgeons like Linton Palmer played a significant role in the development of natural history and ethnography during the nineteenth century. The paper discusses the historical significance and potential contemporary uses of the Linton Palmer albums in the context of three forms of memory-making: firstly, the documentation of topographic, antiquarian, ethnographic, microscopic and other field observations by means of drawing; secondly, the assembling of such materials into personalised albums, part of a distinctive nineteenth-century naval tradition by which the experience of travel was re-collected (in the case of Linton Palmer within the scientific culture of late-Victorian Liverpool); and thirdly, the contemporary uses of such forms of visual heritage in a variety of contexts from family history to Indigenous land claims."--Provided by the publisher.
