The Atlantic imperial constitution : center and periphery in the English Atlantic world /Ken MacMillan.
"Drawing on recent trends in both Atlantic and center-periphery literature, this book examines the relationship between the English crown--monarch, privy council, and ancillary bodies--and its Atlantic colonies under the early Stuart monarchs, James I and Charles I, circa 1603-1642. In doing so, it engages directly with a very large body of existing scholarship, and offers a new understanding of this relationships by demonstrating how the English central government became involved in the affairs of its Atlantic peripheries in the first few decades of these activities, and the extent to which this involvement helped to define and determine subsequent imperial relations"--Provided by publisher.

Gallipoli / Peter Hart.
"One of the most famous battles in history, Gallipoli forced Churchill from office, established Turkey's iconic founder Mustafa Kemal ('Ataturk') and marked Australia's emergence as a nation in its own right. It had begun as a bold move led by the British to ultimately capture Constantinople, but this definitive new history explains that from the initial landings - which ended with so much blood in the sea it could be seen from aircraft overhead - to the desperate attacks of early summer and the battle of attrition that followed, it was a lunacy that was never going to succeed. Drawing on unpublished personal accounts by individuals at all levels and from all sides - not only from Britain, Australia and New Zealand, but unusually from Turkey and France too - Peter Hart combines his trademark eye for vivid personal stories with a strong narrative to bring a modern view of this military disaster to a popular audience."--From publisher.

Art and the Second World War / Monica Bohm-Duchen.
This is the first book in English to provide a comprehensive and detailed international overview of the complex and often disturbing relationship between war and the fine arts during this crucial period of modern history. This generously illustrated volume starts by examining the art produced in reaction to the Spanish Civil War (often viewed as 'the first battle of World War II'), and then looks at painting, sculpture, prints, and drawing in each of the major combatant nations, including Japan and China. Breathtaking in scope, this scholarly yet accessible publication places wartime art within its broader cultural, political, and military contexts while never losing sight of the power and significance of the individual image and the individual artist. Monica Bohm-Duchen's thought-provoking analysis ranges from iconic paintings such as Picasso's Guernica to unfamiliar works by little-known artists.

Jutland 1916 : twelve hours to win the war /Angus Konstam.
"Using a narrative approach, Jutland 1916: Twelve Hours that Decided the War tells the story of the Battle of Jutland, the greatest naval clash of the First World War. Drawing on a wealth of first-hand accounts, some of which were previously unknown, it weaves a highly original narrative, which intertwines original research, into a fast-paced account of the fighting. This is the only book on the battle to use a narrative thread to tell the story from both the British and German perspectives and will provide a fresh perspective on this decisive battle."--Provided by the publisher.

Ravilious in pictures : the war paintings /James Russell.
"This book celebrates and commemorates the wartime career of Eric Ravilious who died on active service in Iceland at the age of thirty-nine. As an Official War Artist, Ravilious visited ports, naval bases and airfields around Britain, witnessed the Allied invasion and retreat from Norway and produced watercolours of subjects ranging from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal in action to the interior of a mobile pigeon loft. Ravilious in Pictures: The War Paintings, features twenty-two of these fascinating images, each accompanied by a short essay in which author James Russell explores the historical context of the work. Drawing on the artist's correspondence and other contemporary sources, these essays offer an unusual, intriguing vision of life during the early years of the war."--

The plot against Pepys / James Long and Ben Long.
Drawing on Pepys's own account, this tells the story of the imprisonment of Samuel Pepys in the Tower of London, charged with treason, in 1679. Then Secretary of the Admiralty, Pepys was said to have passed naval secrets to the French. Set against a fear of Catholic plots and a weakened monarchy, Pepys was incriminated by his political rivals and evidence provided by his accuser Colonel John Scott. Against the odds, Pepys successfully demonstrated that the charges were false and cleared his name. The text is supported by detailed notes and a bibliography.

The convoy : HG-76, taking the fight to Hitler's U-boats /Angus Konstam.
"Drawing on reports and accounts from both sides, award-winning historian Angus Konstam vividly describes the epic battle that enveloped HG-76 as it headed through the Atlantic. The Convoy combines the story of the technical and tactical developments that won the Battle of the Atlantic for the Allies along with a narrative that reveals both the terror and the stubborn determination that defined the experiences of those that served on convoy duties."--Provided by the publisher.

Venetian shipping : from the days of glory to decline, 1453-1571 /by Renard Gluzman.
"Drawing from a broad range of hitherto unpublished archival material and the reconstructed biographies of hundreds of San Marco ships, this book provides a critical overview of the Republic's shipping activities contemporary with the major geographical discoveries of the period, the ascendency of the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean, and the ongoing struggle among the major European powers for political and economic hegemony. Within this complex framework, the agency of environmental factors receives equal importance beside geopolitics and economic interests, challenging the accepted hierarchy of the factors impacting the maritime history of Venice."--Provided by publisher.

Serving on the big ships : life on the liners. /William H. Miller
"Drawing on the recollections of the men and women who served on the vessels, Serving on the Big Ships: Life on the Liners presents a unique window into a bygone age. The 1950s to early 1980s was the last period in which passengers sailed simply to get somewhere, before the liners turned to cruising and airlines became the only feasible means of traveling long distances. It was a golden age of ocean travel, even though the signs of inevitable decline were in evidence all around. For those who worked on the ships, whether stewards or captains or anyone in between, looking back conjures a range of emotions and stories as diverse as the ports to which they sailed. Recorded here are memories of sailing on the North Atlantic with Cunard & Holland-America, with the Italian Line in the Mediterranean, with Royal Mail Lines to South America, with Union-Castle to Africa, and with P&O-Orient to Australia and the Far East. They are the memories of the people who manned the ships, served on them, and through their service, grew to love them."

Bombay Islam : the religious economy of the West Indian Ocean, 1840-1915 /Nile Green.
"As a thriving port city, nineteenth-century Bombay attracted migrants from across India and beyond. Nile Green's Bombay Islam traces the ties between industrialization, imperialism, and the production of religion to show how Muslim migration from the oceanic and continental hinterlands of Bombay in this period fueled demand for a wide range of religious suppliers, as Christian missionaries competed with Muslim religious entrepreneurs for a stake in the new market. Enabled by a colonial policy of non-intervention in religious affairs, and powered by steam travel and vernacular printing, Bombay's Islamic productions were exported as far as South Africa and Iran. Connecting histories of religion, labour, and globalization, the book examines the role of ordinary people mill hands and merchants in shaping the demand that drove the market. By drawing on hagiographies, travelogues, doctrinal works, and poems in Persian, Urdu, and Arabic, Bombay Islam unravels a vernacular modernity that saw people from across the Indian Ocean drawn into Bombay's industrial economy of enchantment"--

Citizen sailors : the Royal Navy in the Second World War /Glyn Prysor.
From the Battle of Dunkirk to the sinking of the Bismark and Scharnhorst, "Citizen Sailors" is the first definitive history of the Royal Navy in WWII. Drawing on hundreds of contemporary diaries and letters, along with memoirs, oral history and official documents, Glyn Prysor paints a vivid human panorama of the war at sea: nerve-wracking convoys, epic gun battles, devastating aerial bombardment and swashbuckling amphibious landings. Seen through the eyes of sailors themselves, it is a compelling account of daily humanity, horror, triumph and tragedy, and shows how the Royal Navy fought in every conceivable vessel from vast aircraft carriers and cramped corvettes, to fast motor boats, rickety minesweepers, Swordfish biplanes and aging submarines.

Abandon ship : the real story of the sinkings in the Falklands War /Paul Brown.
"When Argentinian forces invaded the Falklands in April 1982, the British government responded by despatching a task force to the Atlantic to wrest back control of the islands. The resulting war saw modern weapon systems tested in combat for the first time, to tragic effect. In the aftermath, official documents were released, but many were heavily censored, and others withheld altogether, so that a full understanding of those events could not be gained. Drawing from recently declassified and previously unpublished reports from the official inquiry, Dr Paul Brown details the true story behind the dramatic events that led to the loss of six British ships - HMS Antelope, Ardent, Coventry and Sheffield, RFA Sir Galahad and SS Atlantic Conveyor - as well as the controversial sinking of the Argentinian cruiser ARA General Belgrano by HMS Conqueror."--Provided by the publisher.

Njinga of Angola : Africa's warrior queen /Linda M. Heywood.
"Though largely unknown in the West, the seventeenth-century African queen Njinga was one of the most multifaceted rulers in history, a woman who rivaled Queen Elizabeth I in political cunning and military prowess. In this landmark book, based on nine years of research and drawing from missionary accounts, letters, and colonial records, Linda Heywood reveals how this legendary queen skillfully navigated - and ultimately transcended - the ruthless, male-dominated power struggles of her time."--Provided by the publisher.

Dèunkirchen 1940 : the German view of Dunkirk /Robert Kershaw.
"Dèunkirchen 1940 is the first major history on what went wrong for the Germans at Dunkirk. As supreme military commander, Hitler had seemingly achieved a miracle after the swift capitulation of Holland and Belgium, but with just seven kilometres before the panzers captured Dunkirk - the only port through which the trapped British Expeditionary force might escape - they came to a shuddering stop. Hitler had lost control of his stunning advance. Only a detailed interpretation of the German perspective - historically lacking to date - can provide answers as to why. Drawing on his own military experience, his German language skills and his historian's eye for detail, Robert Kershaw creates a new history of this familiar battle. With a fresh angle on this famous conflict, Dèunkirchen 1940 delves into the under-evaluated major German miscalculation both strategically and tactically that arguably cost Hitler the war."--Provided by the publisher.

German and Italian aircraft carriers of World War II / Douglas C. Dildy and Ryan K. Noppen ; illustrated by Paul Wright.
"This book explains the role of naval aviation in the two powers' rearmament programs, and how wartime experience proved how challenging it is for even a powerful navy to build and operate aircraft carriers. Packed with new artwork and archive photos, it tells the history of the Graf Zeppelin, the Italian attempts to convert the liners Roma and Augustus, and other German and Italian carrier conversion projects which never left the shipyard or the drawing board."

Great maps : the world's masterpieces explored and explained /Jerry Brotton.
"This beautifully illustrated book showcases more than 60 of the greatest maps ever made, from the ancient Babylonian map carved on a stone tablet, through medieval maps such as the mappa mundi to the modern satellite images of Google Earth. Drawing upon geography, science, exploration, art, culture, and mythology, maps have existed almost as long as the human race. They do more than simply describe the landscape - they also offer a unique window into the lives and beliefs of their creators. Great Maps shows how they have changed our understanding of the world, and features both entire maps and close-up visual tours that pull out key details that offer intriguing historical and cultural context. From maps of the world filled with fantastical monsters, through famous explorers discovering new continents, to the first road atlases and modern data-mapping and cartography, Great Maps explores in stunning photographic detail how maps have influenced and reflected our world throughout history."--Provided by the publisher.
