Beyond the barrier : the story of Byrd's first expedition to Antarctica
An account of Admiral Richard E. Byrd's expedition to Antarctica in 1928 drawing on Byrd's private papers. The expedition's achievements included the first flight over the South Pole, the discovery of new territory, the pioneering use of long-range radio and snowmobiles, and the gathering of valuable geological information and data on weather, geomagnetism and the aurora. Byrd's work helped to move antarctic exploration into an age of more advanced technology.

The making of western Indology : Henry Thomas Colebrooke and the East India Company /Rosane Rocher and Ludo Rocher.
"For thirty years in India at the cusp of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Henry Thomas Colebrooke was an administrator and scholar with the East India Company. This book explains and evaluates Colebrooke's position as the founder of modern Indology. The book discusses how Colebrooke embodies the significant passage from the speculative yearnings attendant on eighteenth century colonial expansion, to the professional, transnational ethos of nineteenth century intellectual life and scholarly enquiry. It covers his early career at the East India Company, and his role in the supreme council and as theorist of the Bengal government. The book highlights how his unprecedented familiarity with a broad range of literature established him as a leading scholar of Sanskrit and president of the Asiatic Society in Calcutta. Colebrooke went on to found the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and has set the standards for the study of western Indology. Written by renowned academics in the field of Indology, and drawing on new sources, this biography is a useful contribution to the reassessment of Oriental studies that is currently taking place"--

German commerce raiders, 1914-18 / Ryan K. Noppen.
"This is the story of Germany's commerce raiders of World War I, the surface ships that were supposed to starve the British Isles of the vast cargoes of vital resources being shipped from the furthest reaches of the Empire. To that end pre-war German naval strategists allocated a number of cruisers and armed, fast ocean liners, as well as a complex and globe-spanning supply network to support them - known as the Etappe network. This book, drawing on technical illustrations and the author's exhaustive research, explains the often overlooked role that the commerce raiders played in World War I. Whilst exploring the design and development of the ships, it also describes their operational history, how they tied up a disproportionate amount of the British fleet on lengthy pursuits, and how certain raiders such as the SMS Emden were able to wreak havoc across the oceans."--Provided by the publisher.

From its beginning in 1956, container shipping developed into a huge industry that made the boom in global trade possible. Drawing on previously neglected sources, economist Marc Levinson shows how the container transformed economic geography, devastating traditional ports such as New York and London and fueling the growth of previously obscure ones, such as Oakland. --From publisher description.

1784 : the Battle of Mudeford
This book recounts the Battle of Mudeford, a 1784 skirmish fought near Christchurch Harbour between smugglers and Customs and Excise Officers. The encounter resulted in the death of customs officer William Allen on the Royal Navy sloop HMS Orestes, with Bone Tucker, Guernsey Jemmy, and George Coombes being arrested for murder. George Coombes was later executed for the crime. It details how smuggling in the eighteenth century was considered a 'victimless crime' by many, with smuggler John Streeter avoiding arrest and returning to reputable business after the event. Four appendices feature a commander's log for the Orestes and reports and letters surrounding the battle and its aftermath. Illustrations include a line drawing of Orestes and photographs of St Mary's Churchyard, where William Allen was buried.

Venetian shipping : from the days of glory to decline, 1453-1571 /by Renard Gluzman.
"Drawing from a broad range of hitherto unpublished archival material and the reconstructed biographies of hundreds of San Marco ships, this book provides a critical overview of the Republic's shipping activities contemporary with the major geographical discoveries of the period, the ascendency of the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean, and the ongoing struggle among the major European powers for political and economic hegemony. Within this complex framework, the agency of environmental factors receives equal importance beside geopolitics and economic interests, challenging the accepted hierarchy of the factors impacting the maritime history of Venice."--Provided by publisher.

Serving on the big ships : life on the liners. /William H. Miller
"Drawing on the recollections of the men and women who served on the vessels, Serving on the Big Ships: Life on the Liners presents a unique window into a bygone age. The 1950s to early 1980s was the last period in which passengers sailed simply to get somewhere, before the liners turned to cruising and airlines became the only feasible means of traveling long distances. It was a golden age of ocean travel, even though the signs of inevitable decline were in evidence all around. For those who worked on the ships, whether stewards or captains or anyone in between, looking back conjures a range of emotions and stories as diverse as the ports to which they sailed. Recorded here are memories of sailing on the North Atlantic with Cunard & Holland-America, with the Italian Line in the Mediterranean, with Royal Mail Lines to South America, with Union-Castle to Africa, and with P&O-Orient to Australia and the Far East. They are the memories of the people who manned the ships, served on them, and through their service, grew to love them."

Blood and bushido : Japanese atrocities at sea 1941-1945
"Blood & Bushido vividly recounts the barbaric actions of Japan's navy in the wake of its attacks on Allied shipping, including the ramming of lifeboats, the machine-gunning of survivors and the bayoneting and beheading of captives. As Edwards explains, the ancient Japanese warrior code of Bushido, under which capture is forbidden, was in stark and lethal contrast to the humane code of conduct usually honored by seafarers. Anyone unfortunate enough to fall victim to the Imperial Navy paid a terrible price. Drawing on the dramatic accounts of Allied survivors, Blood & Bushido serves as a reminder of the Imperial Navy's inhumane acts and a tribute to those who perished because of them."--Provided by the publisher.

Great maps : the world's masterpieces explored and explained /Jerry Brotton.
"This beautifully illustrated book showcases more than 60 of the greatest maps ever made, from the ancient Babylonian map carved on a stone tablet, through medieval maps such as the mappa mundi to the modern satellite images of Google Earth. Drawing upon geography, science, exploration, art, culture, and mythology, maps have existed almost as long as the human race. They do more than simply describe the landscape - they also offer a unique window into the lives and beliefs of their creators. Great Maps shows how they have changed our understanding of the world, and features both entire maps and close-up visual tours that pull out key details that offer intriguing historical and cultural context. From maps of the world filled with fantastical monsters, through famous explorers discovering new continents, to the first road atlases and modern data-mapping and cartography, Great Maps explores in stunning photographic detail how maps have influenced and reflected our world throughout history."--Provided by the publisher.

Virginia in the War of 1812 / Christopher M. Bonin.
"Virginia saw significant action during the War of 1812, from the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair to the defense of Norfolk against British invaders. A largely forgotten conflict, the war played an important role in the history of the United States. Drawing on primary and secondary sources, the author provides an in-depth portrait of the "Old Dominion" at war"--

Battle of Malta : June 1940-November 1942 /Anthony Rogers ; illustrated by Graham Turner.
"On 11 June 1940, the British crown colony of Malta - which dominated the central Mediterranean and all-important sea routes to and from North Africa - was bombed for the first time by aircraft of the Italian Regia Aeronautica. The Italians were joined in their efforts by the German Luftwaffe in January 1941. Malta was effectively beleaguered for nearly two and a half years, dependent for survival on naval supply convoys and reliant for defence on often-outnumbered fighter aircraft and anti-aircraft guns. Anthony Rogers provides a retelling of these events, drawing on accounts from both sides. This work features carefully selected photographic images, some previously unpublished. Seven specially commissioned colour maps explore the stategic situation in the Mediterranean in this period, the military sectors into which Malta's defence was divided, and German minelaying operations around the island. The three stunning battlescene artworks and 3D bird's-eye views show key events from the battle, including the 26 July 1941 German attack on the Grand Harbour, and the major Luftwaffe raid 21 March 1942."--Provided by the publisher.
