Defending Captain Lord : a Titanic myth part two
This book recounts the efforts made by the author to clear the name of Captain Stanley Lord, the captain of the SS Californian, the ship said to be in reach of Titanic at the time of the sinking. Lord was officially blamed by both the British and United States inquiries for failing to respond to the ship's distress signals and for the resulting loss of life. No charges were brought against him and Lord spent the rest of his life trying to clear his name. In 1958 following the release of the film based on the book A Night to Remember, Lord approached the Mercantile Marine Service Association to help him clear his name. The author of this book was then the General Secretary of the Association and he took up Lord's case, campaigning on his behalf for the case to be re-examined. The author's book, A Titanic Myth - the Californian Incident, reassessed the evidence against Lord and concluded that Lord had unjustly been made a scapegoat for the loss of life. However, the subsequent publication of The Ship that Stood Still attempted to prove Lord's guilt and led to the author bringing a libel case against the publishers. The case was subsequently settled and in this work, the author comments on the allegations made and seeks to refute the passages he considered unfair or inaccurate to Lord.
