Glasgow Museums : the ship models :a history and complete illustrated catalogue /Emily Malcolm.
"This publication will be the first full catalogue of Glasgow Museums' internationally important collection of ship models. Almost all of the 676 models, which range from elegant cruise liners to humble Clyde puffers, and from simple half-hull design models to magnificent display models, were produced by Clyde shipyards or Glasgow-based ship owners. It is the representation of models from such a distinct geographical area, together with the quality of the models, which makes this collection so exceptional. As well as general chapters about the collection, each of the 676 models has a description and colour photograph. Some of the most famous ships launched on the Clyde are represented, such as RMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Hood, as well models of historically significant vessels such as the first European passenger steamer Comet and the world's first commercial turbine-powered vessel King Edward. The ship models form one of Glasgow Museums most popular and most viewed collections, and enquiries about them come in from all over the world. A stunning collection of photographs will complement newly researched and in-depth chapters. The book will give readers worldwide a chance to see images of the models, a sense of the breadth and importance of the collection and a deepened understanding about the whole history of the ship."--Provided by the publisher.

Scurvy : The disease of discovery /Jonathan Lamb
"Scurvy, a disease often associated with long stretches of maritime travel, generated sensations exceeding the standard of what was normal. Eyes dazzled, skin was morbidly sensitive, emotions veered between disgust and delight. In this book, Jonathan Lamb presents an intellectual history of scurvy unlike any other, probing the speechless encounter with powerful sensations to tell the story of the disease that its victims couldn't because they found their illness too terrible and, in some cases, too exciting. Drawing on historical accounts from scientists and voyagers as well as major literary works, Lamb traces the cultural impact of scurvy during the eighteenth-century age of geographical and scientific discovery. He explains the medical knowledge surrounding scurvy and the debates about its cause, prevention, and attempted cures. He vividly describes the phenomenon and experience of "scorbutic nostalgia," in which victims imagined mirages of food, water, or home, and then wept when such pleasures proved impossible to consume or reach. Lamb argues that a culture of scurvy arose in the colony of Australia, which was prey to the disease in its early years, and identifies a literature of scurvy in the works of such figures as Herman Melville, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Francis Bacon, and Jonathan Swift."--Provided by the publisher.

The business of abolishing the British slave trade 1783-1807
This book examines the lives, writings and activities of four Quaker businessmen who were founders of organized slavery abolitionism in Great Britain: Joseph Woods, Samuel Hoare, George Harrison and James Phillips. All four men were founding members of the London Abolition Committee in 1787, helping to transform abolitionism into a national political movement. The author also considers the possible link between abolitionism and the values emerging from the growth of the market economy and the developing consumer society in late 18th-century Britain.

Kendall's longitude
"Lost at sea: every mariner's fear. Maritime navigational tools could find latitude, but finding longitude remained elusive until Harrison developed the reliable sea clock, H4. Building on H4's success, Kendall made a series of nautical timekeepers, K1, K2 and K3. This is the story of the K2 timekeeper; its adventurous voyages, the people it touched, and its place in history. K2's first voyage, accompanied by the young Nelson, was nearly its last in the crushing Arctic ice. The next two expeditions saw it survive kidnappings, nautical intrigue, and gunpowder plots of the American revolutionary wars. The slave coasts of Africa followed. Bligh took K2 on the Bounty, but lost it in a fight with the mutineers in 1789. It was recovered by an American Quaker from Nantucket, only to be stolen by the Spanish. It rode on mules along the Andes before sailing into the Opium Wars. K2 finally returned to Greenwich in 1963."--Provided by the publisher.

Mersey ports : Liverpool & Birkenhead /Ian Collard.
"The busy River Mersey and its two ports, Liverpool and Birkenhead, have seen great changes in recent years. In Mersey Ports - Liverpool and Birkenhead, Ian Collard charts the developments that have taken place in maritime life on the Mersey, from the 1950s and 1960s through to the present day. Ships of all shapes and sizes have been found on the Mersey, from the old Mersey ferries and the motor ferries that replaced them, to huge passenger liners and container ships. as well as tall ships, tugs and seacats. All of them feature in this detailed photographic history. A host of international shipping companies are represented, including Blue Funnel, ellerman, Harrison and Elder Dempster lines. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Co. wintered its fleet in Morpeth Dock at Birkenhead, and Princes Landing Stage was once the focal point of activity at the docks, as passenger liners queued to berth."--Provided by the publisher.

The Wanton Line : Hogarth and the public life of longitude /Katy Barrett
"This thesis considers the eighteenth-century search for the longitude through Plate 8 of William Hogarths's A Rake's Progress, where a 'longitude lunatic' seeks to solve the problem on the wall of his cell in Bedlam. In doing so, it addresses two linked issues: first how the longitude problem was discussed by the wider British community, and how this affected the actors directly involved in seeking the solution; and second, what was so iconic about this problem that made Hogarth place it at the centre of his modern moral series about a young man ruing by London society. This thesis combines considerations of longitude from plays, poems, religious tracts, novels, prints, paintings and correspondence, alongside the archices and instruments that recorded the search by the Board of Longitude. Useful parallels emerge between the Board's most famous applicant, John Harrison, and William Hogarth's career."--Provided by the author.
