Arcadia and Iberia : P & O's sisters for the 1950s
"In 1954 P&O introduced two new passenger liners to their Australian passenger/cargo service. They were to be the last traditionally designed vessels which the company would build and at almost 30,000 gross tons would be the largest passenger liners operating a regular service 'East of Suez'. The two ships were almost identical in appearance, the main identifying feature would be their funnel tops, but, despite their similarity, their careers were to be very different. The Arcadia, which was the first of the new sister ships, enjoyed a career which spanned 25 years, during which time she was a happy and reliable vessel. In contrast to this, the Iberia's 18-year-life was marred by stability and mechanical problems despite the fact that she was the product of one of the country's most reputable builders. After just over ten years of service both ships were severely affected by the political troubles in the Middle East, with subsequent large increases in oil prices, and by the unassailable competition from air travel. In the late 1960s, as trade on the Australian service fell away, they took increasingly to cruising, a role for which they were ideally suited, unlike the liners built for the North Atlantic."--Taken from the Introduction.

The search for the North West passage / Ann Savours.
"The search for the North West Passage to the Far East was the main driving force behind British arctic exploration from the 16th to the mid-19th century. It included the famous and ill-fated John Franklin expedition--the disappearance of which and resulting search is one of the great tragic stories in the history of exploration--and culminated with Roald Amundsen's successfully voyage in 1903-06. Ann Savours examines the British encounters with the Eskimo, how yearly ice variations affected expeditions, and the daily lives of the early explorers. This book will be compulsive reading for all those interested in the saga arctic exploration and for those who enjoy stories of human endeavor in the face of terrible odds."

Principles of naval engineering : propulsion and auxiliary systems /Matthew A. Carr.
"Intended to provide new naval officers with the essential foundation for understanding the specific mechanical systems they encounter in ships, submarines, aircraft, and land vehicles, this textbook covers the basic design and operating principles of the propulsion and auxiliary systems of today's naval forces. Topics include the main components in the propulsion and auxiliary systems for both conventional and nuclear steam propulsion, gas turbine power plants (for both ship and aircraft applications), and internal combustion engines. The text also discusses the fundamentals of pneumatic and hydraulic fluid power systems, as well as heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems and desalination systems. Other important components covered in greater detail include pumps, valves, pressure and temperature instruments, and heat exchangers."--Publisher's web site.

The Arby boat
"The main aim of this publicaton is to produce a monograph as comprehensive as possible about the Arby boat, using results from investigations and research on this find since it was excavated in 1935. [...] The Arby boat was a neat and practical small vessel. It is one of several finds from central Sweden representing small craft from the Late Iron Age, found near inland waters. [...] The present presentation and treatment of the Arby thus illustrates a part of Iron Age communication patterns which is rather little known, namely those connected with inland water transport and traffic. The original Arby boat, dated to the Viking Period, has for many years been on exhibition at the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm. The replica of the Arby boat, planned and built in Great Britain, has also become part of the collection of the same museum."-- Taken from the Editor's Foreword.

The man who buried Nelson : the surprising life of Robert Mylne /Robert Ward.
This is a biography of Robert Mylne, who was born in Edinburgh in 1733 and was descended from a line of Master Masons to the Scottish Crown. He came to London at the age of 26 and won a competition to design and build Blackfriars Bridge. Following on from that he became Surveyor to St Paul's Cathedral, clerk of works to Greenwich Hospital and engineer to London's main waterworks. In his role as Surveyor of St Paul's, he was responsible for fitting out the cathedral for Nelson's funeral. Mylne prepared the sarcophagus which would rest above floor level in the crypt and arranged to place into it a secret hoard of coins and medals; this event is described for the first time in the book. There are 40 black and white photos illustrating Mylne's life and works. There are extensive notes, a list of sources and a detailed index.

In fair weather and in foul : 30 years of Scottish passenger ships and ferries
A photographic review of the ships of the Caledonian MacBrayne line, a successor company of those originally established by David MacBrayne in 1851 and James Williamson who founded the Caledonian Steam Packet Company on the River Clyde in 1889. The book covers a thirty-year period from 1969 when the Scottish Transport Group came into existence and took control of the main shipping services in the Clyde and West Highlands, changing the focus from passenger routes using rail and steamer connections to ferries able to carry cars and road freight. Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd was formed in 1973 and the Clyde and West Highlands fleets were combined. The book covers ships operating in the Clyde and West Highlands prior to unification, the combined fleet thereafter and ferries operating in the Orkney and Shetland Islands. There are detailed descriptions and photographs of the vessels, an index of ship names and an appendix lists major vessels and their routes.

Rodney and Nelson / Les Brown
"The 'ShipCraft' series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sisterships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic survey of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references - books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. The two ships covered in this volume were the only capital ships designed and built between the wars - a special concession of the Washington Treaty's ban on new battleships - and they were unlike anything before them, with the superstructure three-quarters aft and all main armament turrets forward of the bridge. During the war Nelson survived mine and torpedo damage, while Rodney played a major part in the destruction of the Bismarck, both surviving to be broken up post-war."--Provided by the publisher.

Ships : from the Archives of Harland & Wolff the builders of the Titanic /Tom McCluskie.
"Taken from the archives of Harland & Wolff, one of the world's most enduring and respected shipbuilding companies, Ships represents a selection of elegant designs. During an era in which steam propulsion was still in its infancy, many of these historic illustrations depict the tentative crossover to the new technology, incorporating the fine lines and slender hull shape of the traditional sailing vessel with the power of the new engines. While steam was intended to be the main source of motive power, the addition of sails provided an alternative and trusted method of propulsion should this 'new-fangled' steam engine fail to live up to its expectations. Edward Harland was known in his day as an innovative and daring ship designer and his flair for elegance as well as strength is apparent throughout. The construction of these ships provides as much in the way of safety, utility, and comfort as it does to aesthetics. This unique account is both a fascinating historic document and a superb expression of the shipbuilder's love of seagoing craft, and his exquisite skill in designing such refined ships to the most precise specifications."--Provided by the publisher.

Sources for the custody and location of Admiralty records, 1688 to the 19th century : the impact of past administrative practice on current access and use /Mike Bevan.
"A history of the Admiralty records, 1688 to the 19th century, accounting for contextual information concerning location, custody and administrative function; and how these changed over this time line is the centre of this study. Its aims are to survey secondary literature and analyse primary material in the form of records held at TNA, NMM and with a special focus on the Deputy Keepers Reports, 1841-1869. Further to demonstrate from evidence how records how custody and location of records have changed; reflecting differences in arrangement. This is achieved through the use of both qualitative and quantitative analysis of data with the extensive use of catalogues and finding aids. From this study, main trends in past administrative practice reveal current access and use. The lists studied and modified using primary source TNA references are displayed then analysed in relation to the aims and objectives of the study. Although evidence is less readily available when compared to other public record departments, Admiralty record histories and practices are brought to life from the individual custodians of the records themselves: the record keepers."--p. 1.

At the turn of the centuries : an anniversary portrait of the marines in the Royal Navy of 1700, 1800, 1900 and after
"The year 2000 marks the fourth turn of the century since the creation of a maritime regiment in 1664. The first turn, in 1700, found the maritime regiments in the throes of disbandment following peace-time defence cuts. Shortage of funds and poor accounting prolonged the process and left some officers imprisoned for debt. At the next turn, in 1800, there were some 20,000 marines. With the French and Spanish fleets bottled up in their ports, after being severely mauled at Cape St Vincent and the Nile, the Fleet marines were engaged in raids and land battles from Brittany to Egypt. To John Jervis, Earl St Vincent, their prime value was to ensure loyalty and discipline within his Channel Fleet. The year 1900 found the Royal Navy again in the ascendancy and some 20,000 marines were now essential to the manning of the main armament in the expanding Battle Fleet. In the wars of that year, however, while there was no challenge to British supremacy at sea, the contribution of sailors and marines in the land battles with Boers and 'Boxers' was crucial."--Provided by the publisher.

Historic sail : Britain's surviving working craft /Paul Brown.
Around the British Isles many former working sailing craft survive from the once large fleets of distinctive local types, such as the Humber keel, Brixham trawler, Cornish lugger, Scottish fifie and Thames spritsail barge. In this beautifully laid-out book Paul Brown documents these vessels, concentrating on those of 40ft and over. Each type is introduced and its evolution tracked, with the main characteristics of the traditional design described; there follows a concise history for the surviving craft, including details of their working service, conservation, current location and use, and basic particulars such as dimensions and tonnage. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs, many taken by the author and others sourced from vessel owners and National Historic Ships' archives, Historic Sail is simultaneously attractive and informative, and will appeal to any sailing enthusiast and all those interested in Britain's great maritime heritage. Historic Sail has been produced in partnership with National Historic Ships UK, the official body dedicated to supporting the conservation of historic craft.

Watches : an identification manual for contemporary and collector's pieces /Fabrice Gueroux.
"Buying a previously owned watch can be a risky purchase. Fake watches are legion on the Internet and unscrupulous vendors are increasingly using this market place to sell their fraudulent products. Few second-hand watch websites call upon true experts, which means that purchases are increasingly made at the buyer's risk. How to tell a true watch from a fake? That is exactly what you will discover in this third volume covering the main luxury watch brands, and above all providing specific documentation on the counterfeit market - which is constantly evolving and perpetually looking to make the perfect fake watch. Enhanced knowledge of watchmaking and its flagship brands, along with an understanding of the fake market, will help you make the right decisions when buying a watch."--Provided by the publisher.

Naval leadership and management, 1650-1950 : essays in honour of Michael Duffy /edited by Helen Doe and Richard Harding.
"Many works on naval history ascribe success to the special qualities of individual leaders, Nelson being the prime example. This book in contrast moves away from focusing on Nelson and other leading individuals to explore more fully how naval leadership worked in the context of a large, complex, globally-capable institution. It puts forward important original scholarship around four main themes: the place of the hero in naval leadership; organisational friction in matters of command; the role of management capability in the exercise of naval power; and the evolution of management and technical training in the Royal Navy. Besides providing much new, interesting material for naval and maritime historians, the book also offers important insights for management and leadership specialists more generally."--Back cover.

Wars of empire in cartoons / Mark Bryant.
In an age before computers, television, radio and the cinema the impact of cartoons and caricature was considerable, especially when the only sources of information were posters, newspapers and books. To a news-hungry public, anxious about world affairs, it was the cartoon, with its immediacy and universal accessibility - even to the barely literate - that could speak the message mere words could never convey. "Wars of Empire in Cartoons" is divided into chapters covering the main conflicts of the second half of the 19th century year-by-year. Each chapter is prefaced with a concise introduction that provides a historical framework for the cartoons of that year. Altogether some 300 drawings from both sides of each conflict have been skilfully blended to produce a unique visual history of the wars of the British Empire.
