In fair weather and in foul : 30 years of Scottish passenger ships and ferries
A photographic review of the ships of the Caledonian MacBrayne line, a successor company of those originally established by David MacBrayne in 1851 and James Williamson who founded the Caledonian Steam Packet Company on the River Clyde in 1889. The book covers a thirty-year period from 1969 when the Scottish Transport Group came into existence and took control of the main shipping services in the Clyde and West Highlands, changing the focus from passenger routes using rail and steamer connections to ferries able to carry cars and road freight. Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd was formed in 1973 and the Clyde and West Highlands fleets were combined. The book covers ships operating in the Clyde and West Highlands prior to unification, the combined fleet thereafter and ferries operating in the Orkney and Shetland Islands. There are detailed descriptions and photographs of the vessels, an index of ship names and an appendix lists major vessels and their routes.

Abandon ship! : the post-war memoirs of Captain Tony McCrum, RN /Tony McCrum.
"Captain Tony McCrum's naval career started in 1932. He survived the sinking of HMS Skipjack at Dunkirk and went on to serve on minesweepers and at sea during the landings at Salerno. His wartime experiences were recently published as Sunk by Stukas. This book covers the second part of his naval career between 1945 and 1963. Having arrived back in Plymouth from Trincomlee as a lieutenant aboard the destroyer Tarter in November 1945, his first appointment was as senior instructor at the RN Signals School in Devonport. There then followed two appointments as Flag Lieutenant; first to Admiral Pridham-Wippell, CinC Plymouth Command and then Admiral Sir Rhoderick McGrigor, CinC Home Fleet, where he was also Deputy Fleet Communications Officer. He was based on the admiral's flagship, the battleship HMS Duke of York which he joined in 1947. The fleet exercised in the Atlantic and Mediterranean and 'showed the flag' in various ports in the USA, Caribbean Islands and the Baltic. In May 1948 he was promoted Lt. Commander. In 1950 he instructed at the main Naval Signals School at Leyedene House near Petersfield. Promoted Commander, now 32 years of age, he was surprised to be appointed to accompany King George VI on a state visit to Australia and New Zealand. This was to be aboard the liner SS Gothic as there was no Royal Yacht at that time. However after months of preparation the voyage was cancelled because of the King's terminal illness and the coronation of Britain's new Queen. In November 1954 he took his first command, HMS Concord, a destroyer in the 8th Destroyer Squadron based in Hong Kong. During his eighteen month captaincy of this ship he saw action off the coast of Malaya and a lengthy visit to Australia to assist in the aftermath of a hurricane. After a spell ashore as Training Commander at HMS Ganges and after promotion to Captain in 1958, he was sent to Norway on the staff of the CinC Northern European Command. In November 1960 he was again given a seagoing command. He was to skipper HMS Meon and responsibility for the Amphibious Warfare Squadron in the Persian Gulf. The squadron composed of Meon, two tank-landing ships, four tank-landing craft and a Rhino (a pontoon-like vessel for the shallow-water landing of tanks). He was ordered to cover an area extending from the East African coast, the Red Sea and to the Persian Gulf. Having worked-up this mixed bunch of vessels and their crews, plus army personnel he was confronted with the defence of Kuwait when it was threatened by the Iraqi dictator General Kassem in 1961. He was charged with landing the twelve tanks in his squadron to defend Kuwait's main port of Shuwaikh. This was successfully carried out under difficult circumstances and the Iraqi invasion was defeated. After 42 years in the RN, Tony retired to be with his wife and young family."--Provided by the publisher.

The darkest hour. Micha± A. Piegzik.
The Darkest Hour presents the Imperial Japanese Navy offensive in the Indian Ocean area in MarchApril 1942, the main goal of which was to destroy the Royal Navy in the Far East and achieve domination on the western flank of the Pacific War on the eve of the Battle of Midway. The bold operation by two Japanese task forces (Kido Butai and Malay Force) in the Indian Ocean would only be possible with the fall of Singapore in February and the Dutch East Indies in early March 1942. From the strategic point of view, the Japanese offensive in the Indian Ocean was the only moment in the Second World War when the Axis forces could coordinate their efforts to severely threaten the position of the British Empire in the crucial Middle Eastern and Indian theaters.Volume 1 of The Darkest Hour describes the strategic planning and opening moves of both sides in FebruaryMarch 1942, including the Japanese navy projections on the final steps of the first stage of the Pacific War, and the Royal Navys hopes to halt the enemy advance without taking any significant risks. The Japanese offensive in the Indian Ocean began in March 1942 with the invasion of the Andaman Islands and Christmas Island. By securing both vital positions, the Japanese navy planned to establish its advanced bases in the eastern part of the Bay of Bengal. In the next step, the invincible Kido Butai consisting of five aircraft carriers and their escorts, was expected to crush the British bases on Ceylon and once and forever destroy the main core of the Eastern Fleet. The chaos provoked by the Kido Butai would then become a great opportunity for the Malay Force to cut off the British shipping routes in the western part of the Bay of Bengal. The Darkest Hour is the first systematic attempt to describe this less-well known part of the Pacific War by researching both British and Japanese archive documents and other sources published in many countries, including the United Kingdom, Japan, and India. The first volume examines events up to the capture of the Andaman Islands and Christmas Island in early March 1942, and is extensively illustrated with photographs and color artworks of the ships, aircraft and men involved.

Watches : an identification manual for contemporary and collector's pieces /Fabrice Gueroux.
"Buying a previously owned watch can be a risky purchase. Fake watches are legion on the Internet and unscrupulous vendors are increasingly using this market place to sell their fraudulent products. Few second-hand watch websites call upon true experts, which means that purchases are increasingly made at the buyer's risk. How to tell a true watch from a fake? That is exactly what you will discover in this third volume covering the main luxury watch brands, and above all providing specific documentation on the counterfeit market - which is constantly evolving and perpetually looking to make the perfect fake watch. Enhanced knowledge of watchmaking and its flagship brands, along with an understanding of the fake market, will help you make the right decisions when buying a watch."--Provided by the publisher.

Naval leadership and management, 1650-1950 : essays in honour of Michael Duffy /edited by Helen Doe and Richard Harding.
"Many works on naval history ascribe success to the special qualities of individual leaders, Nelson being the prime example. This book in contrast moves away from focusing on Nelson and other leading individuals to explore more fully how naval leadership worked in the context of a large, complex, globally-capable institution. It puts forward important original scholarship around four main themes: the place of the hero in naval leadership; organisational friction in matters of command; the role of management capability in the exercise of naval power; and the evolution of management and technical training in the Royal Navy. Besides providing much new, interesting material for naval and maritime historians, the book also offers important insights for management and leadership specialists more generally."--Back cover.

Wars of empire in cartoons / Mark Bryant.
In an age before computers, television, radio and the cinema the impact of cartoons and caricature was considerable, especially when the only sources of information were posters, newspapers and books. To a news-hungry public, anxious about world affairs, it was the cartoon, with its immediacy and universal accessibility - even to the barely literate - that could speak the message mere words could never convey. "Wars of Empire in Cartoons" is divided into chapters covering the main conflicts of the second half of the 19th century year-by-year. Each chapter is prefaced with a concise introduction that provides a historical framework for the cartoons of that year. Altogether some 300 drawings from both sides of each conflict have been skilfully blended to produce a unique visual history of the wars of the British Empire.

Pedestal : the Malta convoy of August 1942 /by Peter C. Smith.
"In the summer of 1942 one of the main issues in the balance was the fate of Malta. The island was still a bastion of the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean and a constant threat to the supply route for the enemy land forces in North Africa. It bravely resisted every onslaught of the Axis powers, but food supplies were desperately short and fuel oil running low. In August of that year Operation Pedestal was launched - a last attempt to relieve Malta. Fourteen merchant ships were allocated to it and the Royal Navy provided the most powerful force ever to escort a convoy including four aircraft carriers. Operating from Sardinia and Sicily, the Germans and Italians let fly with their shore-based aircraft on an unprecedented scale. The losses on the British side were appalling, but the objective was achieved and the blockade of Malta was finally lifted."

The world's greatest battleships : an illustrated history /David Ross.
"The world's greatest battleships features 52 of the greatest warships to have sailed and fought over the last five centuries. Beginning with English king Henry VIII's flagship, Henry Grace áa Dieu, the book covers all the main periods of battleship development, including the great sail ships, such as Sovereign of the Seas, Santisima Trinidad, and Victory. The advent of steam-driven warships provide the core of the book, beginning with the introduction of Gloire in 1859 and continuing through all the major pre-Dreadnoughts, such as Inflexible, Mikasa, Indiana, and Tsessarevitch. The author continues with detailed coverage of the great battleships of the two world wars, including Derfflinger, Nagato, Hood, Scharnhorst, Vittorio Veneto, Yamato, and Iowa. The book closes with the last new battleship to be commissioned, Vanguard, in 1946. Included are some of the world's greatest and most powerful capital ships. Many had eventful careers and participated in famous actions - such as the Prince of Wales's and Hood's pursuit of the German raider Bismarck; others, such as the Tirpitz, are remembered as a lurking threat; yet some, such as the USS Maine, are only remembered for being sunk in mysterious circumstances."--Dust jacket.

Tilbury landing stage through time / Geoff Lunn
"Located on the north bank of the River Thames opposite Gravesend, with which there has been a ferry link for centuries, Tilbury Landing Stage is a fine vantage point for viewing shipping passing to and from upriver berths. Ever since it opened in 1930 it has been the Port of London?s main passenger terminal. For many years it was the farewell point for thousands of migrants leaving Britain for Australia. Later, as liner travel changed to cruising, it was regularly used by Soviet-owned passenger ships. To meet the new demands of cruising the passenger facility was upgraded and is now known as the London Cruise Terminal, handling a number of cruise ships each year. Geoff Lunn takes a photographic journey through the history of Tilbury Landing Stage, describing the passenger ships and various other ships that have berthed there and those that have passed close by."--Provided by the publisher.

Scapa : Britain's famous wartime naval base /James Miller.
"Through two world wars, Scapa Flow was the main anchorage of the world's greatest battlefleet - the British Home Fleet. This magnificent setting saw some of the great dramatic events of the 20th century take place, including Kitchener's last farewell before setting sail on the 'Hampshire' to his death, the sailing of the fleet to Jutland, and the surrender and scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet. Less remarked but equally extraordinary is the raising of the battlefleet between the wars in one of the greatest salvage operation in history. World War II opened with the sinking of the 'Royal Oak', still commemorated in the oil stain that floats over her wreck, and the construction of the great Churchill barriers which now link the islands. Perhaps most poignant of all is the little Italian chapel, constructed by prisoners of war on Lamb Holm. This text tells the story of Scapa through photographs. Culled from local collections, the Imperial War Museum, newspapers and many other sources this is a portrayal of the life and times of one of the world's great naval bases."--Provided by the publisher.

Calmac ships in the 1970s : the Clyde and west coast.
"In 1973 David Christie moved house from Essex to Scotland, but it wasn't till 1974 that he discovered the joys of sailing on Calmac's ships. An initial sail on King George V at Oban in her last season was a great introduction but mostly, over the next three years, I focussed on Queen Mary on the Clyde, now safely back in Glasgow at the Science Centre. Most of the Clyde piers are covered, with emphasis on Rothesay. Ferries also feature with old and new on the Rothesay and Dunoon runs and the smaller boats at Largs. The west coast features with Oban as the main terminal, then Mallaig, before a session on the pre-bridge Skye ferries. A single visit to Ullapool finishes this journey back to the seventies."--Provided by the publisher.

Arcadia and Iberia : P & O's sisters for the 1950s
"In 1954 P&O introduced two new passenger liners to their Australian passenger/cargo service. They were to be the last traditionally designed vessels which the company would build and at almost 30,000 gross tons would be the largest passenger liners operating a regular service 'East of Suez'. The two ships were almost identical in appearance, the main identifying feature would be their funnel tops, but, despite their similarity, their careers were to be very different. The Arcadia, which was the first of the new sister ships, enjoyed a career which spanned 25 years, during which time she was a happy and reliable vessel. In contrast to this, the Iberia's 18-year-life was marred by stability and mechanical problems despite the fact that she was the product of one of the country's most reputable builders. After just over ten years of service both ships were severely affected by the political troubles in the Middle East, with subsequent large increases in oil prices, and by the unassailable competition from air travel. In the late 1960s, as trade on the Australian service fell away, they took increasingly to cruising, a role for which they were ideally suited, unlike the liners built for the North Atlantic."--Taken from the Introduction.

The search for the North West passage / Ann Savours.
"The search for the North West Passage to the Far East was the main driving force behind British arctic exploration from the 16th to the mid-19th century. It included the famous and ill-fated John Franklin expedition--the disappearance of which and resulting search is one of the great tragic stories in the history of exploration--and culminated with Roald Amundsen's successfully voyage in 1903-06. Ann Savours examines the British encounters with the Eskimo, how yearly ice variations affected expeditions, and the daily lives of the early explorers. This book will be compulsive reading for all those interested in the saga arctic exploration and for those who enjoy stories of human endeavor in the face of terrible odds."
