Battleships at war : HMS Royal Sovereign and her sister ships /Peter C. Smith.
"This is the wartime history of the battleship Royal Sovereign, along with the story of her four sister ships Revenge, Resolution, Royal Oak and Ramillies. Although old and slow, and bitterly criticized by Churchill and others as being 'coffin ships', these ships in fact played a valiant and doughty role in World War II."--Provided by the publisher.

In this book Vice Admiral Schofield describes the great events of June 1944 which, as Captain of HMS Dryad, he witnessed at first hand."--Provided by the publisher.

The Raid on Zeebrugge : 23 April 1918, as seen through the eyes of Captain Alfred Carpenter, Vc. /Carl Decaluwe, Tomas Termote.
"This book is the fruit of the chance discovery of a series of photographic plates belonging to Alfred Carpenter, who commanded the lead ship, HMS Vindictive, during the raid. These pictures provide us with a unique insight into this daring naval operation, which was to result in the most Victoria crosses ever being awarded for a single action. The plates were used by Captain Carpenter to illustrate a lecture tour of the United States and Canada after the war. Winston Churchill called the raid on Zeebrugge 'the finest feat of arms of the Great War'. This brief, but bloody, action resulted in the highest number of Victoria Crosses ever awarded for a single action. Approximately one thousand officers and men of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines stormed the most heavily defended U-Boat base in Occupied Europe. German submarines based in Zeebrugge were responsible for a third of all allied shipping losses during the First World War. During the Passchendaele offensive of 1917, the Allies attempted to capture these U-boat bases by means of a land-based attack. The failure of the Battle of Passchendaele made it clear that a naval assault was the only solution. As a result, on 23 April 1918, a small force of fighting vessels, towing three blockships, set out across the North Sea..."--Provided by the publisher.

Life of a smuggler : fact and fiction /Helen Hollick
"'Brandy for the parson, baccy for the clerk...' We have an image, mostly from movies and novels, of a tall ship riding gently at anchor in a moonlit, secluded bay with the 'Gentleman' cheerfully hauling kegs of brandy and tobacco ashore, then disappearing silently into the night shadows to hide their contraband from the excise men in a dark cave or a secret cellar. But how much of the popular idea is fact and how much is fiction? Smuggling was big business - it still is - but who were these derring-do rebels of the past? Were smugglers regarded as the heroes of a community, or were they resented and feared? How effective were the men who tried to uphold the laws against smuggling?"--Provided by the publisher.

Early ships and seafaring : European water transport /by Seâan McGrail.
"'Early Ships and Seafaring: Water Transport Within Europe' builds on Professor Seâan McGrail's 2006 volume 'Ancient Boats and Ships' by delving deeper into the construction and use of boats and ships between the stone age and AD1500 in order to provide up to date information. Regions covered will include the Mediterranean and Atlantic Europe. This interesting volume is easily accessible to those with little to no knowledge of the building and ises of boats, whether ancient or modern. Seâan McGrail introduces the reader to this relatively new discipline through the theory and techniques used in the study of early boats as well as the many different types of evidence available to us, including archaeological, documentary, iconographic, experimental and ethnographic, and the natural, physical laws."--Provided by the publisher.

Captain Kidd : the hunt for the truth /Craig Cabell, Graham A. Thomas and Allan Richards.
A re-examination of the life of Captain Kidd focusing on the ambiguities surrounding his final voyage, and subsequent trial for piracy. Officially made a privateer by Royal Commission in 1696 and charged with capturing and plundering pirate ships as well as French ships, Kidd is said to have turned pirate himself. Following his arrest, Kidd maintained his innocence in the face of overwhelming evidence against him and a changing political climate. Kidd was found guilty and executed by hanging in 1701. Includes a list of some crew members who served with Kidd on the Blessed William, Adventure Galley and Adventure Prize.

Into the minefields : British destroyer minelaying : 1916-1960 /Peter C. Smith.
"During the early years of World War I the existing minelaying vessels in service with the Royal Navy were found to be far too slow to penetrate into the strategically important waters around Holland, Denmark, Germany and Sweden under the cover of darkness and survive. As a result, a flotilla of fast destroyers was created that could be readily converted from their normal role into minelayers."--Provided by the publisher.

Midget submarine commander: the life of Rear Admiral Godfrey Place ... 19 July 1921-27 December 1994 /Paul Watkins.
Of all the acts of gallantry in World War II few were as audacious as the attack by midget submarines on the pride of the German fleet, the battleship Tirpitz. Lieutenant Place was in command of submarine X7 in September 1943 and travelled over 1000 miles, negotiating minefields and antisubmarine nets to accurately place four tons of high explosive under the hull of the Tirpitz. Using many first-hand accounts, the book details his life.

Disasters of the deep : a comprehensive survey of submarine accidents and disasters /Edwyn Gray.
"This is the fully revised and updated edition of the first comphrensive account of every peacetime submarine disaster from 1774 to the present day. By examining many of the sinkings in considerable detail, analysing what went wrong and describing the attempts made to rescue the crew and the vessel, Edwyn Gray traces the development of the submarine from the earliest experimental submersibles of the late 18th century, to the nuclear powered monsters of today. The appendices include the most comprehensive and accurate list of submarine disasters ever printed, in the compilation of which the author has had the cooperation of the US, French, Italian, Danish and Japanese Navies, as well as the RN Submarine Museum and the German U-Boat Archive."--Provided by the publisher.

Scott of the Antarctic : we shall die like gentlemen /Sue Blackhall.
A biography of Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) concentrating on the 1910 Terra Nova British Antarctic Expedition to reach the south pole and which led to the death of Scott and the polar party. The author uses diary extracts to describe the expedition's progress. At the time Scott became a national hero, but later became a figure of controversy with questions raised about his competence and character. This book's later chapters focus on the aftermath of the event, exploring and reassessing Scott's character, and recounting the fortunes of the survivors of the expedition who had not formed part of the polar party. The book also includes a short anthology of poetry written to celebrate their endeavour.

Athenia torpedoed : the U-boat attack that ignited the Battle of the Atlantic /Francis M. Carroll.
"This book is an account of a disaster at sea, the sinking by a German submarine of the passenger liner Athenia sailing from Liverpool to Montreal, loaded with Americans, Canadians, and Europeans, attempting to cross the Atlantic before the outbreak of war. For Britain, the sinking of the Athenia was seen as both a violation of international law and a return to the kind of total war Germany had waged in the Great War."--Provided by the publisher.

The RAF Air Sea Rescue Service, 1918-1986 / Jonanthan Sutherland and Diane Canwell.
"Between 1918 and 1986 the marine branch of the Royal Air Force provided rescue facilities, support and other services to this armed service. In its pre-1941 guise as the Air Sea Rescue service, the RAF had an inventory of over 200 motorboats, supported by float aircraft engaged in rescue, towing, refueling and servicing RAF aircraft. Amongst the many characters of this early period was none other than Lawrence of Arabia. The Marine Craft Section itself came into existence in February 1941 as a direct result of the compelling need to retrieve downed pilots from the sea. Initially the craft were lightly armed, but as the chivalry between the British and the German rescue services deteriorated, the launches became heavily armed craft, not only capable of defence but also attack. They were supported by a wide variety of aircraft, including Lysanders and Walruses. The ASR was involved in Dieppe and D-Day and operated in the Mediterranean and the Far East. During the war years alone over 13,000 aircraft crew were saved by the ASR service, in addition to the many hundreds of other servicemen whose vessels had been hit by mines or had fallen prey to submarines. Jon Sutherland has written extensively on military history and warfare. Much of his previous work has concerned the American involvement in the European in World War I and the European theatre of World War II. Diane Canwell has written works on Crete and the Viking era and is much involved in the research for this book. Using an extensive network of former members of the service, the authors propose to intersperse the descriptive chapters with short first-person accounts of particular episodes throughout the service's history."--Provided by the publisher.

Medieval maritime warfare / Charles D. Stanton.
"Following the fall of Rome, the sea is increasingly the stage upon which the human struggle of western civilization is played out. In a world of few roads and great disorder, the sea is the medium on which power is projected and wealth sought. Yet this confused period in the history of maritime warfare has rarely been studied - it is little known and even less understood. Charles Stanton uses an innovative and involving approach to describe this fascinating but neglected facet of European medieval history. He depicts the development of maritime warfare from the end of the Roman Empire to the dawn of the Renaissance, detailing the wars waged in the Mediterranean by the Byzantines, Muslims, Normans, Crusaders, the Italian maritime republics, Angevins and Aragonese as well as those fought in northern waters by the Vikings, English, French and the Hanseatic League. This pioneering study will be compelling reading for everyone interested in medieval warfare and maritime history." -- Provided by the publisher.

Lost story of the William and Mary : The cowardice of Captain Stinson /Gill Hoffs
"The loss of the emigrant ship William & Mary made news around the world not once but twice in 1853. First when her American captain reported the vessel lost before his eyes in the shark-infested waters of the Bahamas and the death of over 200 left on board, then again when the truth emerged - a tale of abandonment, desperation, and the incredible heroism of a wrecker and his crew. Discover the people involved in this mysterious shipwreck, including: Captain Timothy Stinson, the callous young mariner who attempted mass murder Susannah Dimond, the English 19-year-old hoping for a new life in St. Louis with her family, husband and unborn child Izaak Roorda, one of a group of 87 Dutch emigrants seeking to settle in Wisconsin, who found the lifeboat more perilous than the sinking ship Over 160 years later, Gill Hoffs reveals the terrifying true events that drove one man to murder passengers with a hatchet and others to abandon their family and friends - and a wrecker to risk his life for total strangers."--Provided by the publisher.
