Mountbatten, Cold War and empire, 1945-79 / Adrian Smith.
"Mountbatten, Cold War and Empire 1945-79 focuses upon Admiral Lord Mountbatten as a commanding - if controversial - figure in the history of Britain and its empire, from Churchill's wartime coalition through to the Labour governments of the 1960s, and forms a sequel to Mountbatten: Apprentice War Lord. Written in three parts, focusing on the premierships of Churchill and Attlee; Eden, Macmillan, Douglas-Home; and Wilson, this book examines the debates over Mountbatten's record in Southern Asia in 1943-6 and 1947-8. Additional chapters focus on Mountbatten's position at the heart of the British state and his pivotal role at key moments in the immediate post-war era, most notably the partition of India, the Suez Crisis and the renewal of an ostensibly independent nuclear deterrent. This book also considers Mountbatten's relationship with Anthony Eden, both during and following the Suez Crisis, as well as detailing Mountbatten's achievements as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Defence Staff under Harold Macmillan and his immediate successors. Smith acknowledges Mountbatten's centrality to the history of Britain and its empire in the immediate post-war era and, in doing so, presents a fascinating picture of one of the most prominent figures of the 20th-century. Smith's scrupulous examination of primary sources, including those available in the Broadlands Archives, results in a thorough examination of a controversial figure: by eschewing often baseless speculation about Mountbatten's personal life Smith creates the first comprehensive overview of Admiral Lord Mountbatten's career from 1943 to the mid-sixties." -- provided by the Publisher

Tracks on the ocean : a history of trailblazing, maps and maritime travel /Sara Caputo.
"From their first appearance on Renaissance maps, linear tracks representing maritime voyages have shaped the way we see the world. But why do we depict journeys as lines, and what is their deeper meaning? Ferdinand Magellan's route to the Pacific embodied the promise of adventure and colonisation, while the scientific charts of the Royal Navy inspired others to plan conquests, navigate treacherous waters and establish settlements across the oceans. In Tracks on the Ocean, prize-winning historian Sara Caputo charts a hidden history of the modern world through the tracks left on maps and the sea. Taking us from ancient Greek itineraries to twenty-first-century digital mapping, via the voyages of Drake and Cook, the decks of Napoleonic warships and the boiler rooms of ocean liners, Caputo reveals how marks on maps have changed the course of modernity."

HMS Rorqual : commanded by Lennox Napier DSO DSC June 1941 - December 1943 /compiled by Christopher Napier OBE.
"HMS Rorqual, commanded by Lennox Napier DSO DSC, June 1941-December 1943 focuses on both the tactically important missions of HMS Rorqual and Napier's character and approach to submarine command in a sea dominated by Axis sea and air forces. HMS Rorqual not only brought the first submarine relief to the beleaguered island of Malta, but cut off the supply of Tiger tanks to the German Afrika Korps in North Africa, and sank one of the last remaining Axis tankers in the Mediterranean - an act which, according to Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz, made Hitler go red in the face, something considered by Lennox as a lifetime achievement. With much success, but after several narrow escapes Lennox Napier successfully brought HMS Rorqual home when many other submarines did not return."--Provided by the publisher.

Spice : the 16th-century contest that shaped the modern world /Roger Crowley.
"When the Portuguese finally reached the Spice Islands of the Moluccas in 1511, they set in motion a fierce competition for control. With great storytelling verve, Roger Crowley shows how this struggle shaped the modern world. From 1511 to 1571, European powers linked up the oceans, established vast maritime empires, and gave birth to global trade, all in the attempt to control the supply of spices. Taking us on voyages from the dockyards of Seville to the vastness of the Pacific, the volcanic Spice Islands of Indonesia, the Arctic Circle and the coasts of China, this is a narrative history rich in vivid eyewitness accounts of the adventures, shipwrecks, and sieges that formed the first colonial encounters - and remade the world economy for centuries to follow."

British battleship vs German battleship : 1941-43 /Angus Konstam ; illustrated by Ian Palmer.
"At the outbreak of World War II, the four key Capital German ships comprised the Bismarck, Tirpitz, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. Their primary threats where the Royal Navy's King George Vclass battleships, the most modern British battleships in commission during World War II and some of the Navy's most powerful vessels. Five ships of this class were built: HMS King George V, Prince of Wales, Duke of York, Howe (late 1942) and Anson (late 1942). The powerful vessels in this class would clash with the pride of the Kriegsmarine in two major engagements: first, during the Battle of the Denmark Strait and subsequent pursuit of the Bismarck between 24 and 27 May 1941, and again at the Battle of the North Cape on 26 December 1943. This addition to the Duel series compares and contrasts the design and development of these opposing capital ships, and describes the epic clashes on the high seas that ended with the destruction of the Kriegsmarine's major naval assets."--Provided by the publisher.

Lusitania : an epic tragedy /Diana Preston.
An account of the sinking of RMS Lusitania, as a result of a German U-Boat attack, whilst on a transatlantic crossing to Liverpool from New York in May 1915. 1,199 passengers and crew lost their lives. The event helped to change American attitudes against Germany and was a factor in the declaration of war by the United States two years later. The author describes the wartime context of the sinking, the development of transatlantic passenger liners and submarine warfare as well as the sinking itself and its aftermath. The author seeks to tell the story of all those involved wherever possible, using their own words taken from the personal accounts of survivors, court records and archive material from Germany, the United States and United Kingdom. The text is supported by detailed notes and a bibliography.

The art of naval portraiture / Katherine Gazzard
"From privileged officers to working-class sailors, the representation of naval personnel has been a significant branch of British art for over 500 years. The Art of Naval Portraiture unpacks the complex hisory of the genre through key examples in the National Maritime Museum's collection. It charts the historical evolution of the Royal Navy's image and explores the meaning of common naval symbols, from anchors, cannons and swords to uniforms, medals and badges. The book also tells the stories of artists, sitters, and collectors and of the places where portraits were made and displayed, including private homes, public exhibitions and ultimately the Museum itself."--Provided by the publisher.

Operation Title : sink the Tirpitz /Glyn L. Evans.
"Prime Minister Winston Churchill referred to Tirpitz as 'The Beast,' and on 25th January 1942 he wrote, 'The destruction or even the crippling of this ship is the greatest event at this present time. No other target is comparable to it.' With these words the seeds were sown for Operation TITLE, an Allied mission to sink Tirpitz. Harvesting began on 19th October 1942 when the fishing boat, Arthur, sailed from Scalloway with a crew of four Norwegians, a six-man team of Royal Navy divers and two 'chariots' in a brave attempt to tame 'the Beast.' Arduous training of men, fine tuning of the experimental 'chariots,' and the determination of those who undertook this mission all combined in a contest comparable with the biblical tale of David and Goliath. In this case Goliath, in the form of Tirpitz, survived with, sadly, the death of one Able Seaman, Robert Paul Evans RN. This book is a tribute to him and to all those who, undertaking similar dangerous deeds of valour, shared the same fate."

The Royal Navy and fishery protection : from the fourteenth century to the present /Jon Wise.
"From the first recorded mention of British ships protecting of fishing vessels in the late fourteenth century through to recent controversies over the change in emphasis to border patrols and overseas deployments, the story of the Royal Navy's 'Cinderella Fleet' involves many dramatic incidents; until now, however, there has never been a book dedicated to the subject. Naval historian Jon Wise's new work will rectify this omission. Historically there have been two main reasons why protecting fishing vessels was so important: first, fish have always constituted an essential part of the nation's diet while, secondly, fishermen have been an important source of skilled personnel for the Royal Navy itself. It is claimed that the Fishery Protection Squadron (FPS) is the oldest in the fleet, pre-dating the formal creation of the Navy itself in the early part of the sixteenth century, yet it still remains comparatively little-known. The Squadron's most famous operations were the 'Cod Wars' of 1958-76, but for six centuries it has been engaged in the many important tasks of protection and policing of fishing fleets, though more recently it has turned its attention to patrolling oil and gas fields, overseeing quotas and sustainability, and policing the ongoing disagreements over who can fish where and when. The author covers subjects as diverse as the battles with the Dutch for dominance in the North Sea, the protection of fishing on the eastern seaboard of America, and the role of the Squadron in the two World Wars. Containing many first-hand accounts, this thought-provoking narrative will be of particular interest to all those RN personnel who have served in the Squadron, and is set to become the definitive account of this vital but often unsung component of Britain's naval forces, and its impact on national life."--Provided by the publisher.
