The Bard brothers : painting America under steam and sail
"Before the railroad, the great transportation innovation in American life was the steamboat, first successfully developed commercially by Robert Fulton in 1807. [...] Much of what we know about how steamboats looked between 1835 and 1900 comes from the meticulously detailed paintings of John and James Bard, twin brothers who were born in New York City in 1815, coincidentally the same year that Robert Fulton died. The Bard brothers taught themselves to paint, turning out their first joint work at the age of twelve, and they became the greatest chroniclers of the steamboat era. [...] To celebrate the Bards' achievements, The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, has produced the traveling exhibition that stimulated this book. Aiding in the museum's work has been Anthony J. Peluso, Jr., without doubt the leading authority on the work of the two brothers. [...] The narrative tells the life stories of the brothers, who grew up in modest circumstances in lower Manhattan. [...] The book also offers delightful details about the steamboats themselves, their colorful and competitive owners (including Cornelius Vanderbilt and Jay Gould), and the river and harbor traffic of the Hudson River and Long Island Sound. For the Americana buff, anyone interested in United States history and technology, for the steamboat fancier and the folk art enthusiast, this volume is a must."--Provided by the publisher.

Captain Cook and the Pacific : art, exploration & empire /John McAleer and Nigel Rigby.
"British Royal Navy Captain James Cook's voyages of exploration across and around the Pacific Ocean were a marvel of maritime achievement, and provided the first accurate map of the Pacific. The expeditions answered key scientific, economic, and geographic questions, and inspired some of the most influential images of the Pacific made by Europeans. Now readers can immerse themselves in the adventure through the collections of London's National Maritime Museum, which illuminate every aspect of the voyages: oil paintings of lush landscapes, scientific and navigational instruments, ship plans, globes, charts and maps, rare books and manuscripts, coins and medals, ethnographic material, and personal effects. Each artifact holds a story that sheds light on Captain Cook, the crews he commanded, and the effort's impact on world history. Showcasing one of the richest resources of Cook-related material in the world, this publication invites readers to engage with the extraordinary voyages-manifested in material culture-and their continuing significance today."--Provided by the publisher.

China trade and empire : Jardine, Matheson & Co. and the origins of British rule in Hong Kong, 1827-1843 /edited by Alain Le Pichon.
A selection of the correspondence from the Jardine Matheson Archive written by or to William Jardine and James Matheson between the years 1827 and 1843. The letters document their business concerns around the tea and opium trades and British exports to China, as well as providing an insight into the commercial, political and economic context of the time. A detailed index of names provides access to individuals and ships connected with the business partners and their operations. The appendices include a glossary of terms, a list of East India Company Ships, their Managing Owners and Commanders 1829-1830, and a listing of the principal characters referenced in the letters.
