The photographer is looking forward from the waist showing an open hatch to the fish hold, the fishing net windlass and the lower part of the mainmast. A bamboo "coolie" hat of distinctive shape is on the deck.

P34538; On board the Foochow pole junk (trader) 3179 anchored at Weihaiwei. The photographer is on the port side of the poop looking aft showing the port aft corner of the poop including the poop rails. A pile of poor condition bamboo matting is in the corner. 8. Negative number N34539 is very similar. Negatives numbers P34519 to P34540 are all of this vessel taken on the same occasion.

P34465; A port side view, taken from ahead of the beam, of the sampan number 828 (or possibly 829) being sculled off The Bund at Shanghai. The sampan has a shelter amidships on which her number is displayed. She is passing a steam powered passenger launch. The image is very slightly unsharp. The photographer's ship was in Northern Chinese waters in the periods 3 June to 10 October 1937 and 8 June to 4 September 1938.

She is two masted, has a single lug sail set at each mast and is deeply laden. Her sails have been frequently patched, using different colour materials. Her port number 110 is painted twice on her hull. Negative number P34500 is also of this junk.

P34315; On board the Indian kotia type dhow Karimi (fl.1938) anchored at Colombo, Ceylon. The photographer is standing on the port side of the poop looking aft and to starboard showing the ship's wheel and compass binnacle. Wooden slatted bench seats are on either side of the poop and two boys are sitting on the starboard side. An awning is rigged over the poop and the ship's bell is suspended next to the wheel.

P34058; A slightly distant port side view, taken from well abaft the beam, of a three masted fisher type junk drifting under sail in Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong. She has small fore and mizzen lug sails and a large main lug sail set. Two long nets are suspended from the mainmast, presumably to dry. Other nets are hanging over a frame amidships. She has an occuli on the bow and her boat is alongside.Negatives numbers P34055 to P34058 inclusive are of the same vessel.

The photographer is standing just to port of the centreline in the waist looking forward showing the cargo hatches and the base of the foremast. An awning is rigged over the waist abaft the foremast and a crew member is on the left preparing a meal. The starboard door to the forecastle is open. Another kotia is in the right background.

Their mizzen sails are stowed fore and aft. The photographer was in the area between the periods 22 July to 13 August 1937 and 17 August to 5 September 1937. Negatives numbers N34408 and N34409 also include junk number 1792.

Her port number 619HC is painted on the port side of the bow. Four men are breaming or graving the hull. Breaming is the method of clearing the hull of marine growth by setting a fire of furze or brushwood under the hull to burn off all growth.

The after hold has tarpaulin covers. Her lug sails are stowed fore and aft and she has an tattered awning rigged aft above the poop accommodation. The photographer was at Penang from 28 February to 7 March 1938. Negatives numbers P34052 to P34054 inclusive were taken on board the same vessel.
