'Murray Narrow, Beagle Channel'

One of a group of 15 watercolours made by Conrad Martens to illustrate Robert Fitzroy's 'Narrative of the Voyage of the Beagle' (1839), vol. 2, p. 326, though the version engraved includes Fuegians fishing from canoes in the foreground. It depicts the 'Beagle', commanded by Fitzroy and carrying Charles Darwin, sailing through Murray Narrow, which is a part of the Beagle Channel in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. Small boats can be seen either side of the 'Beagle'. There are cliffs on both sides of the channel and mountains in the background. It was engraved by Thomas Landseer, with the title used above, as plate no.12 in the sequence of Robert Fitzroy's 'Narrative'. See 'Conrad Martens's "Beagle" Pictures', no.149, in R.D. Keynes (ed.), 'The Beagle Record...' (CUP, 1979), pp. 389-402. This watercolour was worked up from a drawing of 5 March 1834, which Keynes numbers 148, in Martens's fourth voyage sketchbook. Notes there indicate that Ponsonby Sound and Hoole Island are on the left and the north side of the channel at back centre. The Beagle Channel is a separate 150 mile (240 km) land-bound route between the Atlantic and Pacific south of the Magellan Strait and north of Cape Horn, but less easily navigated. Keynes reproduces the present version on p.136. For notes on Martens, see PAF6227.
