Our National Defences. Men of War fitting out at Sheerness - Guard ship saluting
A coloured engraving depicting three warships anchored at Sheerness, with covered slips and dockyard buildings shown in the background. Queen, in port broadside view in the centre of the picture, has looped sails and rigging festooned with hammocks. To her left is Formidable, in bow view, with her sails hoisted, and to her right is Queen Charlotte, in port stern quarter view with her sails furled. Queen Charlotte appears to be giving the gun salute referred to in the inscription, as smoke billows from her port guns. In the foreground, bobs a large buoy while a naval cutter speeds toward the vessels, in amongst other small rowing and sailing craft.
