This map was drawn by a native artist. In 1840, the circuit of the city wall at Canton was about seven miles long and the population was around one and a half million. This map, based on a drawing by a Chinese artist, indicates the walled city, suburbs and Pearl River. Inside the city, several symbolic buildings, including the watchtower, Flowery pagoda and the Mohammedan tower (Guangta, also known as the Plain or Smooth Tower) are marked.
