Shipping in the Pool of London

Print. 'London: a nation not a city', wrote Disraeli, the British Prime Minister, in 1870. As this picture shows, by the mid-19th century London was among the busiest trading ports in the world. Trade with the Americas had proved hugely financially beneficial to Britain, even after America itself had attained independence. The new world provided new markets for British manufactures, and gave the British valuable interest in the tobacco and sugar industries.
