This engraving depicts Dutch ships off the South African coast with Table Mountain in the background. The title is inscribed beneath the image in Dutch and Latin with the artist’s name on the left, ‘Pet: Schenk’, and the engraver on the right, ‘Amsteld, C.P.’. The title translates as ‘The Cape of Good Hope, the farthest corner of the southern part of Africa, as well as the Cape of Needles [Cape Agulhas] and the Kabo Falco, Table Mountain, Lion Mountain [Lion’s Head] and Windy Mountain [Devil’s Peak]’. The print is from Schenk’s publication ‘Hecatompolis, sive Totius orbis Terrarum Oppida Nobiliora Centum; exquisite collecta atque eleganter depicta’ (Amsterdam: P. Schenk, 1702). The book contained 100 views of ports on four continents.
