Astronomical compendium

Astronomical compendium for latitude 51° North. This ivory compendium is barrel-shaped. The top and bottom of the barrel are engraved with circular designs and inlaid with coloured paste. The sides of the barrel consist of four alternating sections of turned stripes and three sections engraved with floral patterns and inlaid with amber. The top section can be unscrewed to reveal a brass day indicator, and the second section can be unscrewed to a reveal, in its underside, a horizontal dial set over a compass. The brass compass has a 16-point rose and the needle is missing. A glass plate covers all and is held in place by the hour ring of the dial. Crossing the compass glass are curling supports that hold the brass gnomon, which is hinged, pierced and folds flat when not in use. The third section is also removable and is empty, but may once have contained a magnifying glass. Beneath this, a lunar volvelle consisting of two brass discs is set into the remaining body of the instrument. The bottom of the barrel unscrews to reveal a storage space.

This compendium is very similar to AST0415, although it is decorated with amber as well as the lathe-turned decorations that appear on AST0415. The third strip of the instrument probably contained a magnifying/burning glass similar to the one in AST0415.
