Admiral Saunders
An oval bust-length portrait of Charles Saunders (c. 1713–1775) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767. The portrait is surrounded by a fictive scrollwork frame with ribbons at the top. Lettered beneath the image, ‘Müller sculp. / Admiral Saunders.’ This portrait was engraved by Johann Sebastian Müller after Joshua Reynolds’s three-quarter-length oil painting of around 1760 (see BHC2823), possibly via another engraving. The print was published as an illustration in Tobias Smollett, ‘Continuation of the Complete History of England’ (London: Richard Baldwin, 1765) volume 3, opposite page 180. (Updated May 2019.)
