This crude, modern Iranian astrolabe appears to be a poorly made and unfinished copy of an earlier instrument, probably from late 17th century Persia. It looks as though it was made for sale and not for use.

The triangular throne shows an aborted attempt at decoration. There is an incomplete gazetteer in the mater: the names of 32 localities are inscribed with their latitudes only, the longitudes and qiblas being left out. The rete follows a basic design and has dagger- and sickle-shaped star pointers. There are four crudely engraved plates, one of which is blank. On the lower half of the back of the instrument is an incomplete double shadow square.
