Lord Keppel
An oval bust-length portrait of Augustus Keppel (1725–1786) in profile to left wearing captain’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, and a wig. The portrait is surrounded by a thick oval frame on top of a fictive stone plinth, lettered with the title, ‘Lord Keppel.’ This print was published by John Fielding on 18 March 1786 and featured as an illustration in John Andrews’s ‘History of the War with America, France, Spain, and Holland, commencing in 1775 and ending in 1783’ (1785–6), volume 3, opposite page 196. The portrait may be based, in reverse, on Robert Stewart’s mezzotint (see PAD4627). This impression has been cut down, removing the publication line. (Updated May 2019.)
