Astrolabe

The main feature of this astrolabe is its decorative throne with two facing sphinxes at the sides of a compass on the front and two facing lions on the back. The mater is covered in nonsensical inscriptions and the markings on the four (virtually identical) plates are of a poor standard. The rete is characterized by a whimsical and intricate network of stripes and a drinking cup at the centre. The thick alidade is devoid of markings, the peg is broken and the wedge is missing. There is a pointer? and a wedge? marked AST0573.1 and AST0573.2.
