George William Manby, 1765-1854
Print. The integral caption reads just 'Captn Manby'. Manby was a captain in the Cambridgeshire militia and barrackmaster at Great Yarmouth (from 1803) when he invented the line-firing mortar known as the 'Manby apparatus' for saving lives from ships wrecked close to shore.It was first successfully used at Yarmouth in 1808 and rapidly became widespread.
