On board the general cargo heavy lift ship Empire Elaine (1942) while undergoing repairs at Calcutta. The photographer is looking aft from the top of the mainmast. A large number of gas cylinders are stored on number two hatch and most of the hatch beams have been removed from number three hold. The temporary accommodation fitted on either side of the upper deck is being removed. The funnel has the markings of J & C Harison Ltd. A British India M class passenger/cargo liner is off her port side.
