On board the general cargo heavy lift ship Empire Elaine (1942) while under way in the Indian Ocean bound from Fremantle to Calcutta via Madras. The photographer is on the starboard side of the rear of the bridge deck looking aft and to port. The ship is fully laden with the main frames of railway rolling stock, one of which is marked with the tare weight of 10-10-0-0 (10 tons 10 hundredweight 0 quarters 0 pounds). A wooden walkway has been erected over the deck cargo to connect the forward superstructure with the poop. The funnel has the marking of Lyras & Lemos.
