On board the general cargo heavy lift ship Empire Elaine (1942) in the Bay of Bengal.
On board the general cargo heavy lift ship Empire Elaine (1942) while under way in the Bay of Bengal. The photographer is on the port side of the rear of the navigating bridge looking to starboard and aft. The ship has the main frames of railway rolling stock on the upper deck abreast number two hatch, which is clear. A wooden walkway has been erected over the deck cargo to connect the forward superstructure with the upper deck aft of the 5 ton derricks. The temporary troop accommodation erected abreast number three hatch is still in place. This accommodation was removed at Calcutta in Sep. - Dec. 1946.
