Australian merchant ensign (after 1909)

The 1909 pattern Australian ensign, worn by SS 'Ferndale' 1925. the ensign is made of wool bunting, with a linen hoist and is machine sewn. A rope and a wooden toggle is attached.
The ensign is red with the Union Flag in the canton and the Southern Cross constellation of five white stars in the fly. On the lower left side, a large white star with seven points. Inscribed on hoist: 'YD RED ENSIGN AUSTRALIAN'. The last flag to be flown by the Australian Commonwealth Line prior to their transfer to the Aberdeen White Star Line in 1928.
