Hand-coloured stipple engraving. An oval bust-length portrait of Samuel Hood (1724–1816) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1787–95, and a wig. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Right Honorable Lord Hood, Vice Admiral of the Red, and Commander in Chief of his Majesty’s Fleet in the Mediterranean’. Also lettered with the publication details: ‘Painted by J. Northcote. / Engraved by G. Fiessinger, 1793. London. Published at the Act directs Octr. 8th 1793, by Fiessinger.’ This portrait was engraved and published by Franz Gabriel Fiessinger in 1793 after an original painting by James Northcote – possibly the three-quarter-length exhibited by Northcote at the Royal Academy in 1784 and engraved by Henry Kingsbury in the same year (see PAG9334) or, more probably, the half-length painted by Northcote around the same time and now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2774). The uniform in both of Northcote’s paintings is the 1767–1783 pattern but it has been updated in this print to match the 1787–95 pattern. (Updated May 2019.)
