Observing telescope

This telescope would have been used with a visual declination variometer (an instrument for measuring a part of the Earth's magnetic field).

The telescope was taken on an Arctic expedition led by Sir George Nares. It was then used at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich and later at the RGO in the Geomagnetism Unit at Herstmonceux.

It is a 12 inch observing telescope on an adjustable tripod base made of brass. There are three screws for adjusting the base, one for focus and there is a brass azimuth locking screw. The instrument has an object lens cover and a broken eyepiece cover. There is also a detached ivory scale.
