muntz metal
Sample of metal from sheathing of Cutty Sark's hull. Muntz metal a brass alloy made up from a 60:40 copper and zinc ratio with a trace of iron. Stamped on sample is the number 22 enclosed in a circle with the words "Muntz" at the top with "patent, Birmingham" around the bottom. The number 75 on the right hand side, possible the year 1875, part of date has been worn away. 12 holes from nails to attach sheathing to wooden hull planks.
