Post Captain
This is one of the 33 plates that made up the first and only volume published (of three intended, comprising 100 in all) of Atkinson's 'A Picturesque Representation of the Naval, Military and Miscellaneous Costumes of Great Britain, with a descriptive essay on the subject of each plate in English and French.' (1807). A further 16 appeared in about 1808 (as an unbound group publishd in a wrapper) under the title 'Characteristic Groups, Scenery and Costumes of Great Britain', possibly sold this way to use up plates already made for the abandoned 1807 project: this is a very scarce set. The latter included 'An Admiral and a Midshipman', which is dated 'Jany 1st 1808' (no NMM copy, or of either set as a whole). [PvdM 2/14]
