A view of dirty loose pack ice taken from the Kapitan Dranitsyn (1975)
A view of dirty loose pack ice taken from the bridge of the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1975). Some of the pack ice was discoloured from pollution or contact with the land. Note that this is a narrow 35mm image, where the top and bottom have been cropped to give the illusion of a panoramic view.
On 25 July the ice breaker sailed though the Beaufort Sea, passing pack ice. Ivy Sharp spent time watching the ice: 'It is interesting that whilst we are many miles from land most of the ice flows are very dirty. This is due to some pollution, but also from the original contact with land'.
