A group of passengers on the shore at Pauline Cove, Herschel Island

A group of passengers on the shore at Pauline Cove, Herschel Island, for the trip back to the Kapitan Dranitsyn by Zodiac RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat). Two of the Zodiac RIBs are drawn up on the shore, one is obscured by the white hut in the middle distance. These were used to transport the passengers to and from the island back to the ice breaker.

The Kapitan Dranitsyn (1975) anchored off Pauline Cove near the abandoned whaling settlement on Herschel Island. Ivy Sharp recorded: 'Coming back to the ship was hair-raising. The wind had increased and the seas were high for a zodiac so we bounced around like rubber balls. strangely enough no one felt sick, only hungry. Perhaps that is what fear does to you.'
