A general view of the disbanded DEW station at Johansen Bay, Victoria Island
A general view of the landscape at the disbanded Distant Early Warning (DEW) radar station at Johansen Bay, Victoria Island. The base of the collapsed antenna Doppler tower is on the left of the image. Three passengers in red jackets can be seen looking at the remaining pipes and barrels on the exposed rocks.
PIN-D is a former DEW Line Site located on the north shore of Johansen Bay, overlooking Coronation Gulf, approximately 500 metres from the coast in Nunavut. This DEW line site station was constructed in 1959 by the Department of National Defence, and was deactivated in 1963 at which point it was abandoned.
Ivy Sharp noted in her account for 29 July 1996: 'We had to negotiate a very high hill of shale to the site that had been the dewline (early warning system) but the mess they left behind was a disgrace to any country. Stacks of rusted tins and other detritus were just scattered around.' Since she wrote this the site has had decontamination work done.
