A distant view of the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980) in Johansen Bay, taken from the disbanded DEW station at Ross Point, Victoria Island
A distant port side view of the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980) in Johansen Bay, taken from the disbanded Distant Early Warning (DEW) radar station at Ross Point, Victoria Island. In the distance are the islands of Edinburgh Island (left) and Murray Island (right). The see is calm with a few ripples.
PIN-D is a former DEW Line Site located on the north shore of Johansen Bay, overlooking Coronation Gulf, approximately 500 metres from the coast in Nunavut. This DEW line site station was constructed in 1959 by the Department of National Defence, and was deactivated in 1963 at which point it was abandoned.
Ivy Sharp noted in her account for 29 July 1996: 'We had to negotiate a very high hill of shale to the site that had been the dewline (early warning system) but the mess they left behind was a disgrace to any country. Stacks of rusted tins and other detritus were just scattered around.' Since she wrote this the site has undergone decontamination work.
