An aerial view of the distant pack ice in the Queen Maud Gulf and Victoria Strait.

A distant aerial view from the helicopter belonging to the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980) of the relatively clear water in Queen Maud Gulf and Victoria Strait. The pack ice can be seen in the distance. The heavy cloud cover ends close to the horizon where the sky has cleared.

Ivy Sharp recorded in her account for 31 July: 'I returned from the flight over the ice flows[sic]. But they were fairly insignificant. We thought the sky was closing in, but it seems to have kept open for the rest of the flights to take place.'
