The close pack ice around the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980) in Barrow Strait.
A view across the pack ice in Barrow Strait taken from on board the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980). The sun shining reveals that the dark patches between the thicker ice are newly formed ice. There are dark grey clouds on the horizon. By 1 August the ship was steaming up Peel Sound into Barrow Strait with the intention of visiting Cunningham Inlet on the north coast of Somerset Island, although they eventually went straight to Beechey Island, near Devon Island.
