The broken ice in the wake of the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980).
A view of the pack ice with the broken ice route in the wake of the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980). The photograph was taken from the after superstructure looking over the stern.
Ivy Sharp wrote in her account for 2 August: 'I have awakened to see 'fast ice' which means it is attached to the shore and it is so hard the Captain is having to ram his way through, i.e. continually backing and then pushing forwards and since 4.0am we have only covered three miles.'
