The pack ice in Wellington Channel taken from the helicopter.
A view of the solid pack ice in Wellington Channel taken from the helicopter. The corner of the helicopter window is on the left of the image. The darker patches are surface water and thin ice. The photograph also shows the broken ice track in the wake of the Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980) pushing through the pack.
Ivy Sharp's account says: 'We had an especially long flight over ice, but we could not put down because there was too much surface water, Actually the thickness is reckoned to be 2-3 metres, quite strong enough to support our transport.'
