Port bow view of ice breaker Kapitan Dranidsyn (1980), taken from the Zodiac.

A port bow view of the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980) taken from the Zodiac close to the water. The paint work has been removed from areas of the hull revealing the red oxide paint - the impact of continual contact with the pack ice.

Ivy Sharp wrote for 3 August: "It is 7.30am and we are off Prince Leopold Island by zodiac - right through the ice. In brilliant sunshine and freezing temperatures the iceflows (sic) are most impressive, nor do the birds show any fear."
