A port midship to stern view of the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980) taken off the bow area from the Zodiac as it ferried passengers to Prince Leopold Island. The elbow from another passenger taking a photograph can be seen on the right of the image. The bow of the icebreaker is out of the image on the left. The black paint work has been removed from areas of the hull revealing the red oxide paint - the impact of continual contact with the pack ice. Part of the stern from the funnel aft is obscured by a small ice floe/berg.

Ivy Sharp wrote for 3 August: "It is 7.30am and we are off Prince Leopold Island by zodiac - right through the ice. In brilliant sunshine and freezing temperatures the iceflows (sic) are most impressive, nor do the birds show any fear."
