Official and personal papers relating to Admiral Sir William Cornwallis

Papers relating to the career of Admiral William Cornwallis (1744-1819), including commissions, logbooks, official and personal letters, accounts of events including courts martial, and printed material.

Among this material are items connected with Mrs Mary Whitby and her daughter Theresa, the widow and daughter of Captain John Whitby (1774-1806). They were companions of Cornwallis during his retirement at Milford-on-Sea in Hampshire and later inherited the bulk of his estate. Included are some journals kept by Mrs Whitby during her travels in Europe, 1821-1824. They mention her brothers William Symonds and John Charles Symonds, who were both naval officers, and the yacht NANCY DAWSON, designed by the former.
