On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while on a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is on the port side of 01 deck abreast the forefunnel looking aft showing an United States Navy officer in an highline transfer chair about to be swung outboard to transfer to the destroyer James C Owens (1944). The transfer crew are dressed in red overalls and are wearing life jackets. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment.
