On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while on a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is looking to port from the starboard side of 01 deck between the aft 5 inch D.P. gun mount and the Tartar missile launcher showing members of the crew cleaning out the barrel of the gun while other men are in discussion or standing by the ship's rail. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment. The United States destroyer Du Pont (1956), seen from off her port side, is to port and her hull number is 941.
