On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while on passage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is on the starboard side of 1 deck aft looking forward showing the twin Tartar missile launcher with the aft 5 inch D.P. gun mount ahead of it. The aft directors, the funnels, the masts and the ship's motor boat can also be seen. One of the ship's life rings is mounted on the Tartar missile support and the name, hull number and nationality are painted in Gothic script. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment.
