On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while refuelling from the oiler Caloosahatchee (1945) during a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is on the port side of the forecastle ahead of the 5 inch D.P. gun mount looking aft and slightly to port showing the oiler on the right with the fuel hose being hauled across the gap between the ships. The transfer party are wearing red overalls and life jackets except for the officer in charge who is in white overalls. Only the after part of the oiler, from the aft gantry to the stern, is in the picture. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment.
