Ships Cover for HMS Powerful (1895) and HMS Terrible (1895).

Ships Cover for the Powerful class first class protected cruisers HMS Powerful (1895) and HMS Terrible (1895). The documentation comprises numerous stability calculations, detailed reports and precis of the discussions which surrounded the formation of the proposed design [with understandably frequent reference to the Russian cruisers Rossia (1896) and Rurik (1892)], details of the armament and ammunition allowance, schemes of complement, statements of dimensions and estimates of weights, correspondence between the Admiralty and some of the contractors, details of some ships fittings and armour arrangements, cost estimates, trial reports and alterations. One item of note is a rebuttal produced by the DNC to a hostile article published in the August 1895 edition of 'Engineering' criticising the new ships. The papers commence in 1893 at the beginning of the desing stage and end in April 1913, by which time both ships were in reserve.
