Tartar (date unknown)
Scale: 1:48. A plan showing head, trail-board and proposed figurehead for Tartar. The sketch is undated and there are two possible ships: Tartar (1801) and Tartar (1814), both Fifth Rate frigates. However, neither of them has an obvious career history with Plymouth.
The colour-washed figurehead is a full-length male, representing a Tartar (Tatar) warrior, facing forward with his left arm outstretched. He is wearing green ‘salwar’ (baggy trousers) with a yellow shirt below a red flowing cloak lined and edged with ermine. He wears a ‘kelepush’ (truncated conical hat) on his head, which is also trimmed with ermine. The Tartar is holding a sceptre mounted with a crescent moon on the top in his right hand. He is standing on a cannon draped with a standard, below which is a large conical shell with flowers and leaves (cornucopia) flowing from it onto the trail-board.
The reverse of the plans is annotated ‘Mr Dickerson’.
