The Purser, Mr Balchin, with 'Teddy' the koala bear on board HM Troopship Demosthenes (1911).

A photographic print of the Purser, Mr Balchin, with the ship's mascot 'Teddy', a koala bear, sitting in the crook of his left arm drinking from a small silver cup in the Purser's left hand. An open wooden door to one of the deckhouses on HM Troopship Demosthenes is behind the Purser.

The photograph is captioned: 'Mr Balchin' and '"Teddy" takes to the wine'.

The identity of the surgeon for this voyage is unknown, but he joined the ship on 14 December 1916. The diary entry in the album just before this series of officer photographs is March 1917. Demosthenes was taken up from trade to act a troopship between Australia and the UK during 1915 to 1919.
