Three Japanese children and two women dressed in traditional kimonos for the New Year celebrations in Kobe, Japan. One of the women is wearing a blue kimono and the children are on her left. The left and right hand children are wearing red, green and white kimonos with a white ribbon around their hair, whilst the middle child is wearing a white and red kimono with butterfly decorations on the maemigoro. The woman on the right hand side of the image is wearing a floral decorated kimono and is reaching towards the child on the right hand side. All of the children and women are also wearing tabi socks and zori sandals. Japanese men and women are in the middle ground. Cars, buildings and mountains are in the background. This is Slide 45 of a lecture given by Captain Henry P. Bird detailing his service as Senior Second Officer and Navigator on board the tanker Malwa (1961), owned by the P&O Group, from 14 November 1963 to 9 March 1964. The lecture consists of 75 slides.
